WHY is GERMAN BREAD so SPECIAL?

One of my first videos that went popular was me going into a generic supermarket bakery and trying out baked goods from Germany... little did i know that this was almost seen as a crime against Germany and it has taken me this long to redeem myself and really find out more about GERMAN BREAD CULTURE!

The important thing here is: Go to an actual bakery, where the bread is baked right behind the shop where it is soled. Not a supermarket where frozen stuff from a big factory is reheated and soled as "fresh".

As a Canadian who lived in Hildesheim for 7 years! I cannot agree with you more. One of the things I miss most about Germany is the bread and buns. Nothing better than running to the bakery in the morning for fresh gretchen for breakfast. And the wonderful, crispy, flavorful, thinly sliced, dense bread for supper. We had a truck that came twice a week with bread and buns and cake! Oh the Tortes! I loved living in Hildesheim and the bread made it even better!

Bread is so important in Germany that our dinner is translated as "Abendbrot" direct translated evening bread.
A break is a "Brotzeit time to eat bread". Art is often referred to as "brotlose Arbeit" work without money.
Swear word: stupid as bread

The reason for German bread culture is that the growing areas of several species of crop meet in Germany: three kinds of wheat, two of rye, and at least two of barley. Furthermore, the different climate zones allowed different dough processings with yeast or sourdough. Barley can’t be use for solid bread but for liquid bread as Germans may call beer.

I had no idea about the UNESCO. That is awesome! Mr. B approves this video 100%. Last summer before I arrived in Germany my friend Lena was asking me "what kind of bread do you want for breakfast." I kept saying, "whatever you want is fine." She kept asking. I finally said, 'Lena, I come from a country that is completely DEVOID of bread culture...literally ANYTHING you choose will be far superior to what I'm accustomed to.'

Just like they say about Italian pasta, that there is a special type of pasta for every type of sauce (or vice versa), there are certain types if bread that go with certain types of "toppings". Some baked goods can be enjoyed by themselves, others with just some butter, then there are breads that taste phenomenally with jam or honey, others go well with certain sausages or cheeses, but not with others... And all this varies from region to region.

One thing to proof that bread is more important than beer.
Beer is often refered to as: "liquid bread"

It takes you three years of apprenticeship to become a learned baker. Not even a master baker, this will take you another couple of years. And you will get up in the middle of the night, when everyone else is asleep, so people have their fresh Frühstücksbrötchen right on time, and you'll do that 24/7/365. No wonder German bakeries have a Nachwuchsproblem: Not many young people want to become a baker these days, unless it's a family business. Out of three traditional bakeries in my village, two shut down, and a big chain took over. I know you won't get rich being a baker; but isn't there any pride anymore?
I'm traveling to work by bus (good-bye home office!), and I have to change lines near a bakery, and I put down my face mask and take a deep breath of that smell of freshly baked bread, before I put the mask on again, enter, and buy something. Sometimes it's two Brezeln for a snack during the day, sometimes it's a loaf of special bread for the weekend.
Honestly, I couldn't live without German bread for too long. I was in India for a while, I sat in a taxi, and I saw a roadside sign, "German Bakery". I shouted "stop!" to the driver, and then "this way!". Worked out fine, I had a pound of genuine German bread, and met some nice people.

I just bought a special bread from the little bakery in our village. It is produced only ones a week and contains "emmer", the old original type of wheat. They are famous for their bread and rolls, so every morning there is a queue in front of the shop, while the shop of the bakery chain on the other side of the street is empty!

I love the german bread culture, sometimes you only have to drive a few kilometers and you already find a new type of bread. I have moved several times and always found a new favorite bread.

👍German living in Sydney for the past 20 years and up till now I have only found 2 bakeries which have bread that does come close to what I have been used to back in Germany . Unfortunately they are insanely expensive here $14 for a kg loaf and only 2 varieties available. So I am a little bit jealous . On the other hand we have endless beaches next to our doorstep and a climate I've always dreamed of.😷😁

You realize the bread-roll you have there is not t"the typical" kind of roll? The latter's upper is crusty, i.e. you couldn't dent it with your finger-tip - it'd rather crack at that spot. What you have there looks to me like an "Milchbrötchen" - a more all-soft and rather sweet kind of pastry-roll that goes best with sweet spreads like e.g. Nutella .
Apart from that I'm glad for you to have realized the difference between the bread from one of the countless bakery shops that belong to large chains and get their dough from large factories and the real craftsmanship of the artisan bakeries. In that sense; Guten Hunger !

Bread is older than beer - because:
Women were in charge to brew the beer (not the men!) and they found out that it works best, when they do it next to the bread oven - they did not know why, but it worked. It was because the yeast of the bread sat down on the water/grain-mixture and turned the sugar (malt) into alcohol...
It wouldn't have been invented without the bread - and the women of course!!! 🙋‍♀️

Two tips: if you are in Hannover look for a baker store of Back Geschwister. They now run the Bäcker Gaues Shops and Bäcker Gaues bread used to be the equivalent of a three star meal. Maybe the bread still is of the over top quality. Next time you visit the Hildesheim market square, look for the Gerstenberg-Verlag building. I suppose, you rarely have such an old company in Australia
