I love that the flag thing wasn't pre-written-- it just happened in the moment and added so much to the atmosphere

I love that sly wink Gandalf shoots Aragorn, and Aragorn's knowing smirk in return. They may have been relieved of their conventional arms, but they had successfully smuggled in the most dangerous weapon of all.

Notice that Hama and Gamling and Theoden's actual guards do not attack. Only Grima's men.

Always laugh at 2.26 when legolas leads gandalf in like he's supporting a frail old man on his arm, sneaky gandalf

Fun Fact: The flag pulling loose from the pole wasn't scripted. It just happened to be a very windy day and Peter Jackson kept the shot(and later added the shot of the flag landing at Aaragorn's feet) because it was so perfect for the atmosphere of the scene.

Nice touch thst the flag of Edoras is ripped away in the wind showing how things are standing from Eowyns perspective showing a steady decline in glory of Rohan. But then we see the flag land by Aragorn symbolizing a new era as he will take the mantle and bring man back from certain ruin and also shows new times are upon middle earth

Gandalf claims that he needs his staff as support and for extra detail Legolas holds his arm to make it seem like Gandalf really needs that support lmao

If you ever get the chance, go to New Zealand. I was fortunate enough to live there for a while. The vast majority of the scenery in Lord of the Rings is real, it’s by far the most beautiful country I’ve ever been been to. You can stand where Edoras was built, some of it at least, absolutely stunning.

This is my favourite scene in the entire film trilogy by far. The violin melancholically announces for the first time the Rohirrim theme as Éowyn leaves Meduseld, taken by despair, and she watches the wind taking their flag away, symbolising the imminent fall of Rohan, falling right at the feet of salvation who enters the city, 'at the turn of the tide', all the while scenery porn happens in the background; the books are infinitely superior, but this scene alone broke me, won my heart, and brings me back to also watch the movies every year or so. And yes, the flag dropping was planned; the only accident was the directiok in which it flew: they state so in the official commentary that comes with the film. Check it out!

Brad douriff doesn’t get enough credit. What little time he has he really makes his presence known. Flawless English accent. Glad that u get a bit more of him in the extended editions.

When the flag got blown off the staff, that was not part of the script. But Peter Jackson kept it anyway and it was perfect. Symbolizing the fall of Rohan. Until our heroes arrive.

I just watched the film today (yet again) and as a person who loves flags, banners and stuff, the flag flying off made me tear up. It's just so symbolic.. And the way Aragorn looks at it, then up, and again at the flag, probably thinking of the Rohan's downfall.. Massively adds to the atmosphere. God I love this film..
