Its not caused by a specific speed or angle. It's caused by the air being sucked and squeezed through the relatively very small air intakes on the wings when at or above 90% throttle, when below a certain speed. So you tend to hear it at full throttle on take off and when its at low speed flying, then rapidly accelerates. You won't hear it at high speed. But it's much cooler in person to watch it fly. I was lucky enough to watch it fly when I was a kid about 8 years old back in 1992 at Mildenhall Airshow, and then when they refurbished xh558 with the "Vulcan to the sky foundation", I was lucky enough to watch it fly a few times at RAF Fairford a couple of times, and then at RAF Marham families day. It was such a big thing that at low speed it looked like it wasn't moving, then you would see it just roll over like it still had more than enough air flow under its wings to keep afloat, It was like a giant kite until you heard its engines start to really breath, then it was like a demon kite with teeth.

Didn't actually say what causes the howl, so I guess I should. The howl comes from air impacting at high speed with some plating on the front-inner side of the inlet. If the engines sucking fast enough (~90% throttle) it causes the plating the vibrate. It causes some wear and tear on the plating but not too severe either.

Isn’t striking fear into the hearts of your enemies strategic enough? When one arrives on the battlefield, one should announce their presence, to allow one’s foes to know exactly who approaches them to do battle. One shouldn’t slink onto the battlefield with nary a whisper.

I’m not being serious here, by the way.

i lived in hills over looking the factory (woodford) about 5 miles away . we knew when one was having engine tests done let alone taking off .awesome sound so lucky to see so many of them come over head low and loud . i believe f35s can produce a similar sound

My dad worked on them I grew up with them and the victors the howl was more on take off during the cold war when they had to scramble and be airborne in seconds

That howl is a great sound effect for something creepy. I think Event Horizon had a sound just like it in the soundtrack

So you're not going to answer the question? The howl is exclusive to the 200 series engines because of the design of the intakes. That's from an official Vulcan source.

You're welcome.

This air craft doesn't look like it is nearly 70 years old

Right now, Su-57 has The Best howl in the Aviation industry...

The howl isn't relevant to the aircraft flying past you, or the angle or the speed. You could hear it from the other end of the runway as it throttled up for take off.
