Long time recruiter here, and IMO, the best approach to the comp discussion is to provide the prospect/candidate with the salary range info as opposed to putting the candidate in a spot where they either have to outright lie, fudge or stay vague. We, as the potential employer, have the responsibility to be transparent and make offers to great candidates that are fair and market competitive.

My response to this question is "I'm open to negotiation". I leave it at that and never mention a number. They get to guess what my current pay is and get to tell me what they intend to pay for the role. If it's enough for me to be happy, I will accept. Otherwise, I will look somewhere else.

Don't give numbers, you're giving them the power if you do.

Always ask for more. They will give you more job responsibilities as time goes on anyway🤷🏾‍♂️

I always lie and say I’m making much more but I am willing to take a pay cut then I get a 20 to 30 k raise has worked 3 times

Better advice is to say “my salary is negotiable once an offer of employment is extended.”

First one to give a number loses.

"what is the current salary range for this position?"

If I’m in a negotiating position, that is, I already have a job and not unemployed desperate to work, I essentially tell the prospective employer my minimum base expected compensation. Unless there’re other critical factors, this number is never less than my current salary. If they don’t like it, or offer something just marginally better, we save both our times and end the interview process right there.

Holy truth, man. I have followed your advise and the head hunter showed almost maximum of the range to my current employer.

"salary's too high" unless you're an executive, that's so staggeringl unlikely

It's all about negotiation. I once had a recruiter get angry with me when I wouldn't reveal my current salary. I told him I would be negotiating with this prospective employer and that my current salary was irrelevant. By revealing your current salary, all a new employer will do is add a small percentage. Let them make the first offer, but don't just accept it. Your first offer should be way over what you would like to receive. Hold your nerve and hold your ground. Expect to meet somewhere in the middle of both offers. Take a couple of days to consider each offer. That time delay increases pressure on the other party. Never rush into accepting any offer. If they want you, they'll pay you what you want. Even expect a negotiation to take several weeks. This is the only time you will have leverage with this company. By negotiating, I've secured salaries way over my initial expectations. Learn to negotiate.

I always do my research and give a number that is 30% above my desired salary. So far I am happy with the results.

There was an interview when the interviewer asked me how much I was making. I said I wasn’t going to disclose it because my experience and skills should speak for itself.

After the interview I asked my recruiter how I can send a thank you letter. She said don’t worry you didn’t get the job.😂

Always ask for the range the client is providing. If they expect you to leave money on the table they are not looking out for you, or worth working for. You can not spend more time off, and it doesn’t earn compounded interest.

“Do you negotiate the price before you pick out a car?” Make them feel stupid for asking such a ridiculous question.

"The first one to mention a figure usually loses." But many online applications now demand that you list a specific salary (not a range). Often, those jobs are not worth pursuing. Their recruiters or HR reps are not savvy enough to consider the qualifications first.

I always ask what they are willing to offer. Never mention what I'm currently making

What!?... Range !?... Then they'll offer to pay you the least possible that you'll accept....

Whenever I give a range and eventually get a salary offer... it oddly always seems like I get 10-20% above my min number. Never got more than 10% above any offer in negotiations. Curious.

NEVER give numbers until they have. They cannot legally make you give a number.

Raise your hand if you were making above market rate at your last job. I don’t see any hands?
