This is Part I. 2 mL of 0.01 M NH₃ is placed into each test tube and tested with red litmus paper, blue litmus paper, thymol blue indicator, methyl orange indicator, and phenolphthalein indicator.
Theory:
NH₃ is a water soluble gas that is a weak base that reacts with water to creates a weak electrolyte as shown. Sometimes a bottle of ammonia will list "ammonium hydroxide" as the active ingredients.
NH₃ (aq) + H₂O (l) ⇌ NH₄⁺ (aq) + OH⁻ (aq)
