Easy to DIY Compost Bin using wood pallets

The one thing that's missing and that I desperately need on my allotment is a compost pile. There's just so much waste material I have from clearing the new plot and I want to reuse it rather than get rid of it.

Right now I have a plastic compost bin but it's really not cutting it. It takes such a long time for material to break down in mine and I think that's because it's not large enough to create a warm composting environment. I also don't have that many worms so they're not helping with breaking down the material either.

I've decided to dedicate space at the bottom of my new plot for good-sized composting units. Using heat-treated wood pallets, I create the first bay in this video and then begin filling it with waste material, grass clippings, and spent coffee grounds from a local coffee shop. Coffee grounds have a neutral pH once they've been brewed and are a great 'green' material to add to compost.

In this video:
✽ Building an easy compost bin using wood pallets
✽ Filling it with garden waste that will become compost
✽ Green and brown materials for compost
✽ Composting spent coffee grounds

I have had great success adding shredded paper to my compost pile. My mail box is a never ending source for this. I sort out glossy paper or cellophane and what remains I shred and dump into my compost. Less trash, more compost and better worm production makes for a big win. I also use shredded paper as top cover instead of mulch to reduce water evaporation when the situation calls for it.

Thanks, I have pallet and thanks for the education on types of pallets. We will be giving this a try. Million dollar smile make the cute green jumper and pink hat look great. Cheers!

Even though I'm marginally busy (raised bed made of pallet/frame on my balcony), I'm really enjoying the content of your channel which contains very helpful ideas, tips and stories. Thank you and all the best!

I put used coffee grounds around my roses and they love it, so it's a good addition to your compost bin.

I have an old rotary mower, with a bag fitted .I stick any thin branches, woody trimmings -leaves -hedge cuttings on the ground, lay them out thinly and run over the top with the mower to chop it all up before putting in the compost . You can cut the grass at the same time and everything is ready mixed

Excellent video. Thank you.
One suggestion .... if the pallet boards are vertical, they are more likely to let the composting material fallout of the bin than if the boards were horizontal. Might be worth swapping those two around and seeing the impact.

Zip ties would be stronger than baling twine. Also hammer in 2" by 2" cross braces at the corners to keep it from pulling apart.

Seems a great idea not use screws as others suggest, will ry this with zip cable ties.
