Customer's EV Charger CAUGHT FIRE! 😱

A customer called to say their EV charger was melting—and the twist? It was the first EV charger Artisan Electrics had ever installed. After 7 years on the wall, this Rolex untethered unit finally gave up. In this video, Tom investigates the fault, explains why these issues occur, and installs a brand new Zappi multi-phase EV charger.

💬 Whether you're a homeowner, electrician, or EV enthusiast, this video is packed with insights on smart charging tech, installer best practices, and avoiding common faults.

A huge problem with home chargers is that people buy socketed, then realise that they actually needed a tethered unit. So for ease of use, they leave the cable permanently plugged to the charger. The slight alloy difference between the cable and the socket pins causes corrosion and that causes increased resistance and heat which will lead to melted socket, melted plug or melted cables. The pins are designed to self clean when you plug and unplug. Do not leave the cable permanently plugged on a socketed charger. If you do, then at least unplug and replug once every week.
That will destroy any home charger and if it's not of good quality, may cause a fire.
I believe you need to tell people about it.

Our Rolec did the same to us. Ours is the later black ones with online functionality.

We think ours was down to a faulty cable.

But Rolec honoured the warranty and repaired our charger.

As a retired PLUMBER, can you advise the customer to insulate the copper pipe feed to the external bib tap??? Water freezes then travels back into the property, expands then pops 👍👍👍

Really wish the design team at Zappi made these charge points more attractive.

Get the feeling if this was someone elses install there would be some blaming of the installer here or pulling on that neutral and saying lose connection, should of torqued and checked them etc.. but none on that on your own install? Is it faulty or could it of been a loose connection? Should this have all been double checked on each visit to do any maintenance on it?

Love the video insert of the identity of the tool used. Have not seen this anywhere so far. Awesome Well done. Smarty pants!!

A lot of this functionality looks like what Easee were selling 4 years ago with their charger plus Equalizer combo. Plus Easee has the ability to work in 3 phase mode on the somewhat annoying IT 3 phase that i have in my house.

That dynamic current foldback is great add-on, maybe avoiding having to install a heavier tenant main service.

Interesting to see how things are done in the UK. I"m pretty familiar with US electrical work, although I'd leave anything tricky to the pros.

Have the same Rolec model, a few months off 7 years installed, maybe I’ll do a smell 👃 test every now and then 😊 Never had a problem in all those years.

Great video - every word spot on. Well, apart from the bagels maybe 😉 I've never installed a Rolec but have certainly had call-outs to replace RCDs in them. Had a similar situation in a Pod Point recently - installed by their Supplier (surprise surprise, ) found the incoming N sheathing had melted almost the entire length inside the unit. Didn't smell great!
That one was clearly down to a loose connection/poor install, but like you the only units I now trust are Ohme, Zappi and Hypervolt. Even then, my latest Hypervolt install required 3 units...first had a broken N cage for the incoming supply cable - only discovered of course once everything else had been installed. Second was short-circuited when carrying out the RCD testing (apparently there's sometimes an issue where the new LED casing causes this!) But, at least the backup from Hypervolt as an installer was good so although it's dented my trust in the unit, I won't give up on them just yet!

Is wrapping the cable
and using it wrapped ok? 10:21 - are the EV cables so well insulated that it’s ok?

Here in Australia, all installs a TN-C-S and we often use Earth Rods on every property as additional earthing, along with the MEN link (multiple Earth Neutral, equivalent to PME). at the entry point

Saw you pulling out a Wera socket set there I believe. Those tools are great. I have a bunch of Kraftform drivers and socket sets myself and they never fail to impress.

Excellent video and very informative, especially about earthing with pen and earthing rod, I presume, as a backup earthing feature.

I am not for EV battery technology as it currently is, but I appreciate videos like this that are informative and educational. 🫶👍

From reading forums over the years, this is common with Rolecs. Relative has one (looks v similar to this one), its main structural feature seems to be duct tape.

Even when something is waterproof, you can still get condensation forming in side.

About 1 phase - 3 phase: the standards for EV charging (Type 2 plug) do NOT distinguish between 1 phase or 3 phase. The charger announces via signal that the car is allowed to draw a certain current (between 6 and 32A). It is not mentioned how the 3 phases are used. So there may be some (older) EV that charge only with one or two phases - that's up to them, they still have to obey the current limit signalized.
But - I think the Zappy also may cut 2 phases of to limit power to accommodate solar installations that are commanding to load only the solar energy.
