Possibly the best and most realistic explanation of BJJ ranks…and how they should be viewed by the individual player/competitor. White belt is captured by the same mentality as the proverb "youth is wasted on the young". I wonder if upon reaching black belt, there should be a white stripe to start where you regain that freedom and low expectation until your blue stripe…and so on. Just the reward of getting to refresh those 4 'junior' belts again with the wisdom and eye of a black belt. Roy produces the most exquisite videos in small amounts. He is the educational epitome of quality over quantity.

I’ve just started Jiu Jitsu and as someone who is a Karate Brown belt already, I was sooo happy when I learnt how simple the rank system in Jiu Jitsu is before the black belt. It’s a rank system built off skill and experience. That’s how it should be in martial arts

I love this far more than hearing about mcdojos giving away their belts under attendance

I love being a white belt... I'd rather be underestimated than overestimated... 😂

As a brown belt, this explains alot. Feeling like I always have to beat everyone is unnecessary.

This matches up with my experience. As a Purple Belt (two stripes), one day I just started to sub people (White and Blue belts) with regularity and without having to try too hard. I do have good battles with other purple belts and I often look at newly minted Brown belts as a measuring stick of progress (even though it's not my driving motivation). --- I have noticed that I have been trying to round out my game more. I am strong with takedowns and top game, but I have been trying to round out my guard and leg lock game. I have also been trying to shore up my basics. - I can literally feel my growth from one level to the next and it matches what Professor Dean has stated. - I liked this video!

I've been in the arts for over 47 years. I have High ranks in Kempo, Karate, TKD, Kung Fu, aikido. That being said I just joined a BJJ school as a white belt and I love it! Starting over can be a blast!

This is by far the simplest explanation regarding bjj belt rankings. I am proud to say I am a whitebelt! It's not the rank really it's how fun and challenging learning Jiu-Jitsu is.

I don't even do BJJ but have watched a lot of Roy's work and I have to say, he impresses me with his insight and approach to being a martial artist.

Most educated and open-minded black belt I've seen. Willing to learn from lower belts and maybe even other grappling arts. The transition to bjj from catch wrestling was hard because I felt like everyone wanted to prove bjj was better. But I justed wanted to learn more ground game. Not fight like crazy. I finally found a gym that was open minded and willing to see techniques I learned to learn how to defend them if they came across a catch wrestler. That's what it should be. Drilling the basics and learning what others can do so you can better defend against it

And red belt is when you have transcended mortal limits and your name has become legendary.

I just got my first white stripe on my white belt. And damn did it feel good. I rolled so well that day. To get it front of the blue belts and purple belts I roll with. Man. Felt like I was getting a blue belt. Now if I just can re capture that moment everyday I go.

I'm so eager to begin, cant believe I had never come accross this before in my life. had only vaguely heard about it. My grandfatehr learned jiujitsu in japan when he was stationed there during the korean war, this stuff is so epic

Great vid, I shared with my younger brother who just started his journey. I can remember getting my first stripe on my white belt...#jiu-jitsu changed my life fam! And then blue belt came, chest poked out and loving life. Now purple belt and I truly feel like most days, I don't know anything at all. The journey is long, humbling but so worth it. Just don't quit.
