CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Cris (Nicolas Cage) explains his rules for using his foresight to gamble.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
A man with the ability to see the future and change the outcome of events before they occur is forced to choose between saving himself and saving the world in this supernatural thriller starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day, The Edge). Cris Johnson (Cage) is a Las Vegas magician who possesses the unique ability to witness the events of the immediate future moments before they happen. As a child Cris was subjected to a series of cruel experiments by government scientists and doctors, but a change of name and a new identity allowed the tortured psychic to elude detection and start a new life away from the prying eyes of his former captors. Though his clairvoyant vision only extends a few minutes into the future, it has still allowed Cris to eke out a living as a low-rent Las Vegas magician while earning a little extra cash at the blackjack tables. Up to this point in his life Cris has never used his power for anything substantial, but when he experiences a vision of Los Angeles being incinerated in a nuclear holocaust, the small-time magician realizes that he could hold the key to saving millions of lives. But as low as he has tried to lie in recent years, Cris has never completely escaped detection by the government. Now, as terrorists prepare to unleash the ultimate horror on an unsuspecting city, FBI counter terror agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) sets out to capture Cris and convince him to use his exceptional gift to prevent the nuclear nightmare from becoming a terrifying reality. Jessica Biel, Peter Falk, and Thomas Kretschmann co-star in the film, which is based on a short story by acclaimed sci-fi author Philip K. Dick.

If I had this gift, I would hit the casinos and make money too. this was a very underrated film and deserved more attention than it got in my opinion.

One of my personal top 10 movies. Love the concept. Underrated movie.

I have a much darker theory about this movie and the theory is that every time he peers into the future to prevent himself from dying he is actually seeing an alternate version of him selves last two minutes alive.

I've personally always loved Cage movies, I don't understand why he couldn't stay mainstream

Fun movie, but none of it makes much logical sense. After being in Vegas and playing the tables for years, why would they suddenly have this big chase to get him, and for what reason? Why would he jeopardize what he has to steal a car and outrun the cops, who still have no reason to chase him?

0:00 There's so many better ways to spend his ability. Every skill you train to acquire, not the ones requiring muscle, but the ones requiring training, persistence and skill. He can literally learn those in seconds. Just as an example, let's say he's shooting hoops. He can stand at the 3 point line and seemingly just stand still. But every second he could shoot hundreds of balls.
Other skills include: Most other sports that don't require a trained body(Basketball does ofc), shooting a gun, learning an instrument, singing, drawing, driving, new languages and so on.
Anything where repetition and time spent is enough to improve, is a field he can master in minutes or hours.

"There's no pattern to this guy, he's all over the map. Wait a minute... Is He pulling tricks on us, is that legal? THAT LITTLE PRICK KNOWS WHAT'S COMING. He's looking right at us, it's like he can hear us? Here's the thing about the future.... " Nah

If I had this ability, I would work as a warning system for important people/organizations, like NASA when they're about to launch a shuttle. They'd just need to send a live feed to my home. That way I could have dozens of clients at the same time, each with their own screen.

It's amazing how this guy literally has the power to see an enemy's attack from every direction before they actually happen, then he can easily dodge the attacks!

If he had a second super power (like super strength or laser eyes or something) he would be really OP

Cris Johnson: Here is the thing about the future. Every time you look at, it changes, because you looked at it, and that changes everything else.

I've watched this movie many times over the years. Netflix allows this. Sometimes I feel like Howard Hughes who watched the same move "Ice Station Zebra" over and over again. Now I understand why. He was not crazy, he was just another one of us with a lot more money.
I'm one of those "time Paradox" movie followers. This movie is awesome. Not only because of the beauty of female actors and their terrific acting, but because this is a unique "time Paradox" movie in and of itself. Most other "time Paradox" movies fit into some sort of a standard mold. But this movie goes beyond that, and into areas of time travel "paradoxes" that were not considered in other movies, IMHO. Even to this day, this movie is unique in it's treatment of "time paradoxes". I must emphasize the phrase "time Paradox" because this is a fictitious theory that can only exist in our minds.
In my opinion, the original "time paradox" movies started with the TV series "The twilight Zone" and the rest took off from there. There are so many "time paradox" rip offs from other movies and tv shows that they are too numerous to mention.
However, IMHO, this move, "NEXT" is a sleeper. It deserves much more credit than it received.
Sure, the women are beautiful, but the story deserves a special place in the history of "time Paradox' movies. Just my humble opinion from a sci-fi time paradox fan. DPA

Sometimes I find myself driving the speed limit in a very calm state. Then a cop or a speed trap passes by. Very interesting.

They caught on to him because he was consistently winning, little by little, but nevertheless winning. He needed to learn how to lose a couple of hands, give your enemies the perception of your defeat, and you'll aways win without them being the wiser.
