I'm going to have to remember that threadmill knurling technique.

I made a lead deadblow hammer for my shop from scraps laying around from building radiation shielding. I made a mold in a piece of 4x8, taking care to get a section which was knot free and straight grain. I was going after a mix between a cross peen and Mjollnir. After carving the rough shape into the mold, it was soaked for a day. I hit the mold cavity with a torch very briefly to get a light carbon coating inside, and to clean up any remaining hanging wood fibers. I then melted pure lead with some borax to help keep dross down. Tin/lead fishing weights were then added to iincrease the impact resistance of the hammer. Talc powder was rubbed into the mold, and the lead was poured into the mold. Once the mold was full, it went into a water bath to cool everything down before the lead could burn the wood. If I could change one thing, I would have used a drafted pin to make the hole for the handle rather than the straight pin that was used. After cooled, the raw casting was removed from the mold, and the debris cleaned off it. The head went into our manual mill to true it up and clean the working faces and the faces to be decorated later. Over the next month or so, when I had free time, I would work on carving traditional Norse iconography for Mjollnir on the sides. One face of the hammer was machined and filed to a usable version of the classic Mjollnir. The other side was brought down to a cross peen with the flat being perpendicular to the handle. I didn't bother decorating the top or bottom of the hammer as these would see much abuse as this was intended to be used in the shop. Some time was spent adding a draft to the oval handle hole. It opened up from 1" wide and 1.5" long at the bottom to 1.5" wide and 2.25" long at the top. For the handle, I recycled some old growth oak from a pallet. This had bands that were no more than 1/32". It was so very dense. After a rough shaping, the handle was kept short to stay with theme of Mjollnir. The handle blank was vacuum impregnated with a very strong and flexible epoxy. After cleaning the blank a little, we tried to break it. stood up to anything we could physically do with our bodies. I'm sure we could have broken it, but for our purposes, it was indestructible. The handle was given its final shape with a good flare at the bottom for a positive grip when swinging it. It had a slight arc to it going up, and a belly just under the head to make grabbing there for bumping material in the lathe and mill easier. The handle was installed with a wooden cross wedge and a steel ring wedge. That was sanded down and a layer of epoxy applied over that. The epoxy was sanded and then polished to a crystal clear finish. I figured this would keep the wedges looking great for many years. The handle was sanded up to 2000 grit. Then the french method of applying tongue oil was used, I think I ended up a 35 layers/applications of the tongue oil. It looked beautiful and always wet. But the finish was hard, not too hard, and very durable. Any grease or grime from your hands when using it would just wipe away. I never did apply anything to the lead to preserve the machined appearance. I did, however, use a sharpie marker and fill in the low areas of the carvings so the carving were easier to see. Of everything I've ever made, I think I put more of my soul into this than anything else.

Are the Haas machines rigid enough to do the gnarly heavy cuts you do with the Pumas??

But have you ever seen their fails. Going balls to the the wall with minimal work holding doesn't always work out for them. This one doesn't seem bad. Maybe they are learning.

Wont be epic until you deburr all those hangnails👍

Yeah, nah. Useless as an actual hammer if you enjoy having wrists lol
