When I use my Ally X with Razer Core X, I simply set my display to be “second screen only”. Doesn’t route back to the main display. Using a 3070 and it’s great.

Fun little experiment! Now that Oculink is here, I can't wait for that to be the standard. With a much more affordable card your setup makes sense, but all that power being left on the table because of the connection hurts.

Seeing the screen on through the closed case is nice to look at though!

The dream for me would be an e-gpu to connect a handheld or laptop that gives it desktop-like performance. That way you still have the mobility of a portable device for trips and the power of a desktop when you're home. Really hoping that e-gpu tech can reach that point in the next handful of years.
