Candi Sewu - Indonesia's second largest Buddhist Temple is hiding some ancient secrets. Who built it? Why was it ruined? What is in the main chamber? What is behind the secret false wall?

Hey guys, Today we're going to look at the second largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia. This is a very large temple, but nobody comes here. This temple is called the Candi Sewu Temple, which means the place of 1000 temples. And it's known for its ancient secrets. Let's go inside and see what's there.

As we walk inside, we are greeted by these two giant guardians called the Dwara Palakas. These are huge, probably ten feet tall or more. This is the guardian door keeper or the Dwara Palaka on the left side of the entrance. And you can see he's very big. He's probably about ten feet tall. And look at his mustache. And if you look into his mouth, you can see the fangs coming out.

His eyes are popping out because he's always angry. In his hand, he's holding a mace called the Gadha, which is a brute force weapon. And then you can see that he's wearing this sacred thread. But is it a sacred thread? No, he's actually wearing a snake on the arm. You can see how the snake is again, worn as an ornament.

Now, let's look at this Dwarapalaka and see what we can find. Now, on the side again, you can see the Dwarapalaka with the fangs and a large mustache. But look at his sacred thread. Here you can see the head of the snake. And again on the arm. Look at how he is wearing the snake as an ornament.

And here is another snake. He's holding another snake. And the snake has its open hood at the back. You can see an interesting detail. He's not only holding a big club called the Gadha, he's also having a sword that is put inside a sheath. You can see this flower and you see this little detail on his ankle, which is anatomically accurate.

Who was this God? Is he Shiva? Is he Buddha? Is he Mahavira? Or maybe even Jesus! Or some other God? Who is he? Can you guess who this is? It's quite difficult to identify by the statue because the face is index of the mind. And once the head is cut off, it's very hard to identify who this is.

However, we know this is Lord Buddha. We can identify him by his typical sitting posture and his hand gestures called Mudras. Many people in Indonesia claim that the head is destroyed due to nature, but that's not how nature works. Nature is going to destroy everything evenly. It's not going to just pick out the head and cut it off.

It may have been anyone who destroyed the head, but this was done willfully. Let's go take a look at another statue and see if that statue has the head intact between these ruins. There is one more temple that still looks somewhat intact. Let's go inside and see if we still have the Buddha intact. Unfortunately, you can see that his head is also chopped off.

This is a sad reality of such a fantastic ancient Buddhist temple. Out of respect for Lord, I'm going to remove my shoes because I'm going to sit here for a few minutes and tell you the history of Candi Sewu. Candi Sewu means a Temple Complex of 1000 temples. But are there 1000 temples in this temple complex? No. When archeologists started to put numbers on these individual temples, they could only find 249 temples.

However, when people first found out about the ruins, it just looked so large that people named it Candi Sewu and the name stuck with the locals. So this is why they still call it Candi Sewu, even though it only has 249 temples. Now you can see that this is an ancient statue. There is no doubt about this. However, archeologists are trying to reconstruct the head of Buddha.

Now they put some plaster of Paris on this and they started to put the metal rod inside because they're going to create or re-create the head of Buddha and then fix it on top of the shoulders. That's very interesting because there would have been 249 Buddha statues like this placed in every small temple. And if you look around, it's very, very interesting because you can imagine that this is a huge Buddhist temple complex.

Now, Candi Sewu is one of the most underrated temples in all of Indonesia. Why do I say this? Because it is the second largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia. Most of you have heard of Borobudur, which is the largest Hindu (*Buddhist Actually) temple complex in Indonesia. But Candi Sewu, is a name that nobody hears about. Why? Because it is in ruins.

I believe many of these ancient temples were destroyed to erase knowledge and eliminate the function. These structures had a function. I believe Praveen is on the way to discover the secrets. My deepest gratitude. Thank you Praveen! 💕🙏💕

I believe the reason why they have the wall and the stairs is for them to climb and do the abhishek of the statue. I believe that the statue was a sitting posture budha which ended right at the end of the wall and by climbing the stairs they would reach above him from where they would probably pour milk and water for abhishek and would decorate everything around as well.
Amazing video! The site looks really ancient and beautiful!

As an Indonesian, my thought that Chandi Sewu underrated because there is Chandi Prambanan (The Largest Indonesian Ancient Hindu Temple)... Its about the second largest Chandi in Indonesia, after Borobudur (Buddhism Temple)... then another Chandi is 'forgotten..' There are alot Chandi here and we can't know it all in simply student history book...

The Candi Sewu encodes the three & four-fold metaphysical motif of the Buddha. The 3 & 4 motif is a metaphor for Circling (3) your Square (4) & attaining enlightenment (a.k.a. Buddhahood). From the aerial view, the ancients clearly captured a static hypercube made of stone. The prominent harmonic numbers & their arrangements:

4 (4 x 1) = The Entire Complex is arranged in a square. There are 4 rows of temples. The Dvarapala (Door Guards) guard the 4 cardinal directions. They have 4-fold earrings & they sit on a square pedestal that features a flower with 4 petals.

72 (4 x 18) (3 x 24) = The two inner rows. A harmonic number used in many religions. The central dome of the Candi Borobudur is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues seated inside of stupas. In astronomy, 72 years calculates 1 degree of solar arc during the 25, 920 year-long Great Year.

168 (4 x 42) (3 x 56) = The two outer rows. A harmonic number used in many religions. 168 is the product of the first two perfect numbers (6 & 28). 168 = Primes less than 1, 000. The number appears all over fractal mathematics, to include 168 equaling the second smallest non-abelian group, 168 automorphisms of a genus 3 Reimann surface, etc. 168 includes all the numbers above as divisors (1, 3, 4, 18, 24, 42, & 56). The Fano Plane has 168 symmetries. The word Glory (Doxa) appears 168 times in the New Testament.

249 (3 x 83) = Total temples. The number is represented in Mahayana Cosmology. It also represents 5 x 50 = 250, minus 1 (You/The Buddha in You). This motif is similar to the Judaic motif of Moses & the 49 Gates (or 50 Gates), in which he was able to cross 49 of the 50 gates.

Good Luck Circling your Square! 👍

Very cool. I have been waiting for your adventure in Indonesia. Thank you for your information! The heads of Buddha statues unfortunately end up in foreign museums all over the world or in private collection.

Looking forward to the next episodes!

Glad you visited and studied these ruins in Indonesia.
Check temple complex in Dieng Highlands. Also if you're still in Indonesia, check Gunung Padang, oldest ruins in the world to date.

There was a guard behind this wall. As a rule, these were bhoots. They were smaller, slimmer humans and extremely effective as guards. You yourself have seen many narrow underground tunnels and some are covered with stones. If you disassemble the stones and widen the passages, you can find their skeletons. I was lucky, I saw several skulls of these creatures. The tradition of using these creatures as guards comes from the depths of ancient times, when the Ganas brought them to earth.

Fascinating as always. I believe that the ancient people who used the narrow passage were probably smaller in stature. And why would the Buddha be missing? It's been a habit to destroy a temple statue or carry it away to exert power over the god it represents.

Thank you for the update, Praveen..!! It's interesting to know only the demonic statues are intact in the destroyed temple, and it appears something or someone shattered the temple to pieces at once. Indonesia's Buddhism is special, because they have a primordial Buddha named Sanghyang Adi Buddha, the Buddha who doesn't exist in any other Buddhist sects. I believe the headless Buddha shown on the video is Sanghyang Adi Buddha, because there are statues of him intact with the same hand pose in Indonesia. Thank you very much for the teachings as always, Praveen.

If anyone can solve the mysteries, it would be you. I've subscribed to your channel for years and think of you as a spiritual Sherlock. I really like how you point out the symbiology and try to figure out the reason behind all the ancient sites. Keep up the good work, man.

I visited Indonesia ba2ck in the early 70s. The temples in the middle of small town were beautiful and so ancient. I was happy they were still there since the country had over the centuries changed religions .

The destruction surrounding you in this video makes me sick and sad.
Humans are endlessly disappointing. Their stupidity only matched by their violence and hate.
India in particular being a victim of that endless cycle.
All we all can do is try and do better and try to put this world back together again someday.
Great as always.
Ps: ive seen several people use portable diver lights on other channels. They are extremely bright and may help when you go into these pitch black places.

Oh wow Praveen!
Such mysteries you disclose to us in your amazing videos.
The questions you ask are exactly what I’m wondering about which makes them so compelling.
Sending you, your family and your team ❤❤❤
