Be careful with hack #2. I worked for an airline for 23 years, and I know the airline I worked for had an automated system that would cancel the remainder of your itinerary if you missed any flight in your original itinerary. And their justification is that you breached your contract with them by not showing up for your flight. I can't tell you how many angry passengers I have spoken with when they discovered their return trip was canceled from trying to game the system.

What rrally staggers me about airline fares is the breakdown I get after purchasing a ticket. The actually flight is one thrid the cost of taxes and fees that are tacked on. One recent example is a round trip from Derroit to Athens. The total fare was $680, but the actual ticket was only $250. The rest was taxes and fees.

I went to Hawaii in March from LAX (6 hrs) and it was $370 then went to Dallas for memorial day weekend (3 hrs) and it was $420. The time of year you go makes a huge difference

When I used to travel regularly I learned a few additional tricks:

Sometimes booking 2 one-way tickets instead of a round trip is actually cheaper if flying a longer distance. I saved $250 from Detroit to Anchorage.

If you are seeking to accumulate miles and segments for program status, booking the longer flight is an option!

When I was flying weekly I used to knit 3 roundtrip tickets around one another in the opposite directions. So I would book a rt LGA-RSW-LGA and a separate RSW-EWR-RSW and a FLL-LGA-LGA and this was never questioned. Of course I did have to keep a spreadsheet on where my car was in Florida and once goofed and to rent a $14 Avis and drive from West Palm to Ft Lauderdale! But it saved a fortune and was challenging as well.

You are so awesome! I always look forward to your posts. Thank you for putting so much hard work into these deals. And congrats to you, your wife, and your sweet little girl on the impending arrival of the new little one.

Two tips for frequent flyer programs: 1) If you have an address outside of the carrier's country (U.S. address for Air France), the miles to attain status levels is easier, and you'll get more miles per flight as you move up in status. 2) International flights give more miles. I used to fly Paris-Geneva (a short flight) twice a week, and I really piled on the miles.

Definitely saving this video! I remember there was a time that buying tix, booking hotels, car rentals were better, less expensive if done DIRECTLY with that company. I’ll have to try these website for future trips. Also, at the time of this writing MOST airlines have cut back on the number of daily flights.

I've been watching prices for about 8 months for a trip we just returned from to Orlando. We ended up driving instead of flying but the prices were actually best about a week before we went. Prices ranged around $300 round trip for months leading up to our trip and dropped to about $100 for a few days about a week and a half prior. Then gradually went back up. Thankful we chose to drive as a flight we would have likely booked ended up being canceled and 9 people we know had to rent a car to drive back to an airport 2 and a half hours in the opposite direction from home to Orlando where they left their cars. We beat them home by about 12 hours.

PERFECT TIMING! I need to take my family to a wedding this November and instead of waiting until August like I was going to, I actually need to book in JULY! THANKS MATT!

A thing to note that if you book a flight with a layover with skiplag and you don't board the second flight you can potentially get blocked with the airline you fly after multiple occurrences.

I no longer travel by air very often but this was incredible information that I am going to pass on to friends that do! Thanks so much for the great information Matt! You are the best!!

I agree 100% about booking one way flights. Much cheaper as airlines change the fares multiple times daily. But this video, wow! What a huge game changer for all of us who are just tired of paying insane airline prices. Thanks!!!

Thanks for the great tips! We used the two airline trick for our Hawaiian trip. ATL to SFO on Delta with a quick overnight in San Francisco on the way to Hawaii, had a delicious dim sum meal. Then Alaska Air from SFO to Honolulu. Coming home, the time change worked in our favor so we were able to catch a flight back the same day. Saved at least $500!

Just be careful when doing an all-airport city search, especially in Europe. There are some airports that low-cost carriers claim are city airports that are very far from the relevant city, and the connections are often expensive. For example Paris-Beauvais (BVA) is 85 km from Paris.

That is one of your greatest deals! I've done the offboarding once 2 decades ago in Denver on a flight from D.C. to SFO because it was way cheaper.

That seat one I wish we would have known about. My husband and son are quite tall and have always had a problem with seating. They can't always get the bulkhead seating and are miserable in most other seats

Probably my favorite video yet. Never thought about booking a flight somewhere and getting off at the layover location. Genius idea!
