I just discovered one yesterday. There were 2 stop overs so three flights. The first one was with the airline site I was looking at, but then the last two were with a different airline. When I went to the other airline their price for the very same trip was almost $1, 000 less. I will now start checking as a regular routine, knowing that it will not always work.

I'm flying return from Japan to Canada in a few weeks.
First I tried going through the usual airlines websites. Prices were crazy. So I went to Google flights. It was great because I could use the graph to find the cheapest travel days.
Then I cleared my cache, went to the airline site (DELTA) and.. tried to book... for DAYS. Long story short I had to book From Tokyo as the domestic portion that Delta was selling online wasn't with a partner airline. Took days, 3 phone calls costing $40 until the rep got on the phone (or chat) with Global Partner Support who said "we can't honour the fare we posted on our own site" (not a direct quote but the gist). I booked domestic flights with an LCC and am good to go now.

I'm an American and I speak French. When I plan a trip to France which includes train travel, I go on the French rail system in French to purchase my tickets. They have a lot of price variation, including some very deep discounting depending on the day and time of travel. If you buy from the American site, or sometimes even English language on the French site, you will pay either the highest price listed or some average but you will never get the deep discounts. This principle also applies for many other travel and tourist sites, such as the "local" price for a boat ride on the Canal St. Martin in Paris, tickets for shows and performances at many venues, car rentals and excursions.

I have just discovered your videos and learning lots of new tips! I agree 100% that booking one way domestic flights have been less than booking round trip with same airline. Last year I booked one way with Delta to JFK and one way return with out of LGA via United and saved $150. Also I have booked one way to get to my destination a few weeks or months in advance then booked my return while on vacation for less.

Thank you for this video! Good stuff. That thing about RT v OW is you do have to check both. Thank you for sharing that!!! Recently I was having anxiety looking at RT tickets on BA in Biz class and in a last effort I checked OW fares and it saved me over a grand. I thought this was crazy because last year I was looking at two OW fares and then checked the RT and it was basically the price of one OW fare plus a little more. The only exception I have found to all of this "checking both fares" is using SouthWest because all fares are OW so a RT is just finding two OW fares and adding them up. Keep making more vids, thanks!

What I do to save is use a discount airline like Flair Airlines in Canada. I reserve my wife by herself with no luggage (only personal item) and then book myself and get the luggage bundle (1 checked bag + 1 carry on bag + 1 personal item). Although my flight ends up close in cost to a non-discount carrier, my wife's flight is dirt cheap thus saving up overall.

Something to consider is, consider the fact that the cheapest flights tend to have one long, or several layovers. With the cost of airport concessions food, if your layover in DFW is 12 hours like I booked before, you may spend more when you factor in these very costly meals. $7. for a bottle of water, anyone? I'd rather go non-stop for an extra $50., than spend $100. on two or three meals or snacks. Not to mention the drain of energy involved. Think again about attempting to sleep in an airport with non-stop PA announcements, or the maintenance crew using a carpet cleaner in the area. Bring ear plugs or, good luck!

When I was booking flights to Hawaii I noticed the prices jack up towards the end of the week/weekend, then lowered back down again on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thurs. I followed the exact same flight for 2 weeks, noting down the costs and noticed the price change pattern. So to me, I feel like the day you book does make a difference. I agree with you about the incognito mode, didn't see a difference in prices. VPN is also a good one, my mum in Australia was looking at flights to get to the US and it was about $1000 more than the price I was seeing searching from the US for the exact same flight, even with exchange rate! crazy!

I’ve purchased OW w/separate airlines because it was cheaper than a round-trip. I’ve also used the incognito mode and yes it did work. My friend was searching for a flight for 2 people. At the same time, I did the exact same search found the exact same flight for $600 less (combined). However I really think it is hit or miss. I’ve also turned on my VPN, set it to a different country, and search for flights. In some cases I could get the flight cheaper. Not much cheaper but cheaper.

When I lived in Myrtle Beach South Carolina I can fly to New York sometimes for under $100 round-trip, sometimes less on Spirit. I just carried one carry-on which was free. I could run up to New York for a few days or a month. Very easy and cheap and never had any problems.

I tried booking my international flight as two one way tickets and it was more expensive each time. The round trip was cheaper each time.
