I only shoot stills and I absolutely love the IQ from the S5. I understand the contrast detection AF is not good for video or sports photography, but for most other things, it's brilliant. I would definitely recommend it for portrait, fashion, landscapes, weddings, events, etc. It is a real value for the money.

Just shot a short film with my s5 today. Gear matters, but story will always win

I shoot on an og S5 for photo and video and I absolutely love it. It still does everything it needs to do for me.

I personally would jump from S5 to S5 II X, rather than the S5 II. Or, most likely, use S5 as B Cam. It is an excellent camera and I definitely feel it will go down in history as a cult camera in the L mount ecosystem

Re: Still photography - The real killers on this S5 (and all Lumixes, really) for shooting stills isn't so much the 24Mp sensor resolution (which is a decent number, don't get me wrong) so much as the pixel pitch, or distance between the individual pixels. The S5's pitch is 5.91 micrometers (µm) which makes for incredibly fine detail in still shots, compared to similarly-priced cameras from other makers. Add to that the ability to work natively in ProRes RAW format, unlike the S5II, and the S5's *far* better colo(u)r and image quality, as compared (to my eye, anyway) to the S5II, and the original S5 may well be the best still-image camera for the money on the planet today. It's so good that I replaced my venerable Canon 5DmkIV system with an S5 system for prosumer still photo work.

I love my S5! I mainly use it for photography and see no reason to upgrade to the S5ii since i haven’t found anything holding me back

I will keep my S5 alongside the S5 II, because of Pre-Burst Mode, excellent Timelapse features (no Autofocus needed) and overall I love it still. I never felt it was holding me back in any way. I just wanted a second one, that's why I bought the S5 II.

I’ve just brought one. So far I’m loving it.

Yes, the S5 was and still is an excellent camera. But, I went for the S5ii. The S5ii was out for a year before I got it. I had the FX30 and traded it, along with some Sony lenses, for the S5ii. Which, at the time, cost $700 less than its original price. I think you could be happy with the S5 or S5ii.

Have had my s5 since late 2020, it's a great everyday driver for someone who needs a capable hybrid video/stills camera. I have an FX3 and FX6 at work and they're great cameras but for a single shooter I still prefer my S5, yes the auto focus is weaker but it's not horrible and the other areas where the camera shines kinda offer a better value statement in my mind. Back when I bought it investing in L mount was a bit a gamble, but now there's a really great lineup of lenses and I've found it cheaper/easier to adapt lenses from other systems to L than to other systems which has been a plus as someone who uses alot of vintage/second hand lenses.

Seems like a great starting point. Thanks for sharing. I might just skip the GH5 and hop on the L mount

Great video - although you didn't mention the 96mp photo mode and the 6K video function (which is actually more like 5K 10 bit 4:2:0). I love my S5 so much, I recently got another one (used, mint) for £799. Insane value.

Thanks for the video! I got this camera used for Euro 850 !?! haha, can you suggest a versatile prime lens for this? 35 or 50mm? I can only afford one lens

Ive been only using my s5ii. But my s5 isn't "outdated". It's just different, like a lot of older cameras. Crazy good photos though

£783 brand new from B&H or Amazon US, assuming you can send it to a friend there, or find some way around import taxes to the UK. Even with import taxes it's less than £1000 new. Also autofocus performance with this body depends a lot on the lens choice.

I have both but for me the S5 is the better camera, very fine details are better with most profiles. The S5II has better IBIS and much better AF but for controled shots the S5 is better.

Thanks, a great and helpful review! I didn't need the better autofocus and video cap. so the S5 should be fine.

Actually it can record 5.9K internally. Dustin showed it when you switch to burst mode and start recording... It was really 6K as it slowed down my computer, could not handle 10 sec or recording. :D

Just bought an s5 for in mint condition for £640 with 2 years of warranty, same price as to repair my broken a7iii. For the price nothing can buy this camera for video and photo. Autofocus is not a problem, I didn’t use it at all in 5 years with a7iii. The only thing I will miss is my samyang 85mm 1.5T.

As a Leica M & Q shooter I have been knocking around the idea getting the S5 or S5II for a little more reach with zooms when needed and from someone that doesn't shoot video I'm not sure I really need the S5II. Thoughts?
