Damn. I remember shortly after 911, I was 9 & president Bush announced us going to war, I went to school the following day & looked at pics of the Vietnam war & recall being even more terrified. All the adults in my life, teachers, parents, neighbors all were having extremely intense reactions. I was in the car with my Mom & we listened to the declaration via NPR, I'll always remember my Mom & how she said, "this is really bad..". As a kid I was extremely freaked out, from what I was seeing in the news but moreover the reactions from all the adults around me was extremely scary...

Fields full of spike traps was worse than fields full of land mines. If you step on a mine you're almost always dead. If you fall in a trap you live in agony while you bleed out or die from infection since the spikes were usually covered in dung

As a Vietnamese, that one is just Basic, you probably haven't seen other trap yet that is even more terrifying, like we will plant random sharp metal thing on the road of a targeted marching group then place on it some poop with pee then burry them with dirt, the US soldier who's duty is to search and disarm the Mine across the journey dig by hand usually so when they dig up they will cut their hand because the sharpness of the metal item below and get Infection from Poop and pee going through their wound, if they doesn't get Cut they will eventually stumble across random lake and they 100% will take a bit time to wash their hand in the lake so we planted actual Grenade and mine there. Those random thing were planted so much and spread so long to the point US soldier would not even bother to try to detect anything else after a while and when that happen is when they will reach the part of the road that was actually have Mine planted, the rest is explosion and traumatizing anyone who see it

The best (worst) part is that most weren't designed to kill outright. Spikes where covered in feces or other toxic sludge to disable more than kill.

You keep the injured man from fighting, but also 1-2 others minimum trying to take care and treat that man. Morale drops, supplies run low and the troop is defeated before they ever fight.

The worse I know of is the camouflaged pits dug and filled with sharpened bamboo. They would shit and piss in is so even if the fall didn’t kill you, the infection would.
