I know this is fiction but when your kids ask “why can’t i... ?” You should explain it. Because the kids not gonna understand why they can’t do it and probably do the thing anyway. Parents should explain why things are dangerous.

Theory: tod use to be a normal boy, and the black eyes thing was a separate being, and wanted mason to be his new vessel

Theory: Tod was once a normal boy and perhaps another person that was used by the monster as a vessel came into their house and so implanted itself into him. I think it does that because it needs a mother to care for it but simultaneously drains her with his dark soul or something. And now he‘s found a new vessel, her son, that he can use to get love and affection.

Theory: When Todd showed Mason that he could make his eyes disappear, and told Mason he could show him how to do it, Mason probably learned how to (and became one of those black-eyed monsters) and lied to his mother when she asked if Todd did anything to him.
