#1 rule of war is to never underestimate your enemy.
#2 never get killed by your own weapon.
#3 Pick your battle ground.
#4 remember the rule of 3 to 1. Always out number your enemy.

"Religion, ideology, resources, land, spite, love or just because. No matter how pathetic the reason, it's enough to start a war."

“why do we have these rules…”

Canada. Canada is the reason we have these rules.

Rule #1 should be “if you are in a position of power in the government, you must fight in the war”

When I was in the US Army, we had many classes, at least quarterly on the Geneva Conventions, and then went through many hours of training before deployment, and more classes in the field. I've been retired for quite a while, but I think the new people are trained in these areas. At least I hope so. But I know that some of the people I served with didn't "like" the Law of War. But that is their problem. Law of War is something that applies to us as well as them. It's important.

The only rule I can think of for warfare is don't shoot the medic.

Every Infographics episode: "Welcome to my 20 minute video on a topic. The topic is this. Now here's 17 minutes of backstory before the 3 minutes of actual substance"

Rules of War are really just words on paper. SOMETIMES consequences come from violating them, but that is rare.

For example, Medics (Army Combat Medics, Navy Corpsmen, etc.) are considered non-combatants and are not supposed to be fired upon. Yet it happens all the time in war. If it even gets questioned, the people shooting at medics often use the excuse that war is crazy (which it is) and that they had no way of knowing we are medics. It is probably obvious why we would be targeted.

Related to this, us Corpsmen are expected to treat enemy wounded as well as our own. Obviously we will treat our guys first, but we can actually get in big trouble if we do not heal an enemy combatant that we could have helped once the fighting is over.
