honestly feat training during downtime is the best way to get feats, people who make their game one long run with no time to rest or lapse are missing out on player customization and good roleplay opportunities.

Wild Shape into a Horse. This will give you 2 extra feet. If you really wanna exploit this you can choose a Spider, Centipede or even a Millipede.

Our warlock wants to get training to play a musical instrument from my Bard. At first I thought this was really wholesome and a good way of bonding, and then I realized they want to replace me as the entertainer when my Bard dies because I rolled stupidly low on HP 🤣

I have a list of things that players can do in game and get a free feat (players don't know the conditions), since we play on roll 20 I just add it to their page and don't give them the benefits until they tell me about the feat, which is a good way of having the players read their character sheet and making sure they know their abilities

In my last session my character was possessed by Tiamat for a little while. Afterwards I still had a bit of lingering power in the form of a feat, (the explanation was that, if you pour juice into a glass and then pour the juice back out, there is still a few drops of juice left in the glass. So even though Tiamat stopped possessing me a tiny bit of her power remained afterwards)

Career progression... taking on a new background can also provide feats. Going from an initiate to a student to a graduate to a professor should of course have it's rewards.

I know this is much more homebrew, but I personally like "achievement" unlocks for feats.

Basically, make a small list of achievements for each class/character that are not super easy to achieve, but when finally achieved you get to select one feat from the list of achievement feats.

Something like this for an example.

Monk ~

Move Like Wind ~ Complete a battle encounter in which you dodged every attack that came your way (must dodge at least 5 attacks and must be a dodge, not block or etc)
Tranquility in Turmoil ~ Manage to successfully enact a non-damaging, support type action while negatively effected with 4+ mental debuff effects
Perfect Palm ~ Deflect, Parry, and/or Redirect 100% of an attack that would have been lethal to you if it connected


Etc etc.

Our group enjoys it.

I've played in campaigns where you can only get defeats through training or getting through other means never given for free

In my regular game I play a PC who he just left the party for a while, my DM said when he returns he’ll be able to select one of a few feats that he would’ve picked up on the way based on his out of game choices so he can return to the party stronger
