I give a maximum of 10 years, and we will not be able to distinguish the game from reality 100%.

The benchmark in regards to realism right now is the Amicia character model from "A Plague Tale: Requiem". You have cutscenes in that game, that are so photo realistic, you have to look really close to detect the flaws that give away, she is not a real person. There are other character models in that game too, but they mostly do not cross the threshold, only Amicia does. The core reasons are her eyes and her facial skin - her skin looks real in every lighting situation and not like an animated character (TLOU2 has better facial animations, but overall the characters due to the texturing look still animated). Since that game I know, in 5 to 10 years we can play games which look every frame like "The Lord Of The Rings" movies, but with characters and environments you can interact with and fully control. Games become now a serious alternative to film and series for story telling with realistic human characters.

You ever need a one eye'd actor hit me up man, army medic/retired and this game is so one point with mental health yet doesn't endulge the victim mentality. Absolutely wonderful and makes you want to push through.

When you combine these visuals, with the ability to manipulate skin and bones in real time with AI advancements… It won’t be long until we are having real time conversations with endgame characters, via our headset microphones… Having those characters respond in real time, being able to pick out inflections in our voices, and understand how to respond verbally in real time. Not only that, but also to remember those conversations and be able to pick them up from the last time you saw them and respond to in game world issues, weather and the players actions… Will allow for interactions with NPC’s like we’ve never seen before.

So realistic, that players will be able to have actual relationships that change over time and evolve based off of what is discussed and players actions to that character and the world around them. Making those relationships, feel as real as those with people in your real life. To the point, where, if something were to happen to that character … It would elicit real emotions from the player. Especially if that relationship had matured and evolved over a decent period of time. Say, an enemy kidnapped, or killed that character that you were friends with… Or, that character turned bad…

It will bring about a whole new gameplay experience that will mimic experiences we have in the real world. Which is very exciting and some thing that myself and some industry people talk about 10 years ago. The idea of which started with Milo and Kate, if anybody can remember the Xbox game that was being developed for their camera rig by one of Microsoft internal teams. Unfortunately, I think due to technical constraints, they just couldn’t make it happen. But the idea of having a AI controlled character that you could interact with both vocally, and physically through the camera system was an exciting one.

Something, thanks to somewhat recent advances in AI… thats going to be possible in gaming, maybe by the end of this generation. if not a touted feature for next. That’s going to add a whole new layer to gaming. With or without VR. I think with VR, it will add that much more realistic interaction. But even without it, it’s going to make games exponentially better. By allowing the player to interact with NPC’s without canned responses or interactions. Something that’s going to change the way we play completely. Something I’ve been waiting for for the past 15 years or more. That may be possible fairly soon. Exciting times, my friends.
