State of Unreal - Senua's Saga: Hellblade II | GDC 2023

We're pushing the boundaries of realtime facial animation in Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, as showcased at GDC 2023 with Unreal Engine.

The amount of emotions Melina can convey just through her eyes and facial expressions will never cease to amaze me.

Absolutely blows my mind that nobody, including Melina herself, had any idea she was born to act until she tried. From being so self conscious she asked them all to look away when she did her first ever takes, to mastering a craft she'd never attempted before and winning an award for her performance.
Despite being extremely nervous and probably terrified at first she totally committed whatever it took to become Senua, seriously what an inspirational lady

Well, wow! The foundation that is the acting is fantastic, she did a great job. I wouldn't want her against me, I'd lose... And compliments to the tech that allowed a rendered image that looks so darn good! I can't believe we have gotten to this point.
I was born in 1959 so I came into games where, "the blue dot is you, beware the red dot that's the baddie! Now escape the dungeon..." Yep, that far back. And now this!? I'm living in an amazing time. Great job everybody.

The first time a game engine has been able to cross the uncanny valley, in my humble opinion. This is absolutely astonishing to see!
