Interestingly enough, while they used special effects to put Forrest Gump next to John Lennon, Dick Cavett actually came in and filmed his part. They gave him a wig to replicate his 1970s hairstyle, and he joked that he liked it so much he took it home with him.

The scene is witty and funny but takes such a dark turn without much effort at all. Arguably one of the darkest moments in the movie.
