What I Learnt Running An Online Summit Internationally | Ben Ivey
1. Partnering is key
I could not have run this summit by myself, it is of paramount importance to partner with the right people so you don’t have to do everything yourself. This is of great importance in both your personal life and your professional life. No need to be a one man army, recruit others to help you.
2. Make sure to outsource in advance
I struggled with meeting the deadlines of the summit as I wasn’t organised enough in advance with regards to hiring the right people. I then had a bit of a challenge to do this whilst in China, so for those looking to run your own events, hire in advance to give you more room to plan and correct any issues that occur.
3. Do not be in China whilst attempting to use social media elsewhere
Being in China whilst attempting to prepare for the online summit was a bit of a mistake unfortunately. I will make sure next time I have access to speedy internet and access to instagram, facebook …etc so that I can better prepare and share the event.
4. Hire wisely at the start and test before you begin
There is always a balance between skills and expertise, I have a tendency to test people out who are slightly cheaper to see if they can perform. It has worked in the past however, next time I will make sure that I test these people far in advance as opposed to the last month before the summit. This led to some unwanted stress of hiring a few people last minute.
5. Grab a few speakers far in advance to help gain other speakers
One of the issues we faced to begin with was reaching out to speakers without having a website. This meant it was a challenge to reach speakers who did not know who I was because we didn’t have any rapport. It was fine for those who knew me because they understand the impact I want to have. However, next time I want to make sure I onboard a few speakers many months before reaching out.
6. Interviewing people is a LOT of fun!
I will definitely be doing this from now on as I gained a lot of value from the speakers and I have no doubt many people will benefit from their knowledge and expertise. I am working out which format is best to share interviews, either a podcast or video, so leave this with me and I will let you know my thoughts in due course! Any ideas let me know.
7. I underestimated how much time goes into setting online summit’s up in the first place!
Holy moly! I had no idea that prepping an online summit really requires many more steps than I had thought possible. From designing all the emails leading to the summit, prepping the workbook, reaching out to speakers, creating speaker videos, creating webpages for each speaker. There really are many steps, this is not a walk in the park so make sure you are committed!
8. Marketing is everything
You can have the best content in the world but if people don’t know about you it means diddly squat. What I noticed is that despite the value we were giving we didn’t hit the target we aimed for with regards to people impacted from the summit. Next time I will spend more time on hiring great marketing months in advance so that the event could have the impact we would want it to have.
9. No matter how much you know, it is very important to gain perspectives from other people as you never know what you will learn.
In life it is easy to think that we know a lot. Yet hearing it from other people shared in a different way often gives us a deeper understanding. I found it insightful to understand how people articulate their message and how best they shared their wisdom. Learning is a never ending process make sure to never stop learning.
10. Smile and enjoy the journey
Despite the ups and downs of all the things that could go wrong. As well as the amazing speakers and how they over delivered. Once again it brought home the point that we must enjoy the journey, be present with what shows up and celebrate the small wins along the way.
I hope that you gain value from what I have shared and that you too if you choose to run an online event can have the impact you want to have, through my mistakes and learning opportunities I have had so far.
