Bowflex 552 Adjustable Dumbbells Review: Cheap, But Good?

Bowflex 552 SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbells review we take a deep dive into why they're so popular, why they're so cheap, and why I still recommend them despite their flaws.

There are many adjustable dumbbells to choose from including Powerblocks, NUOBELLS, and Ironmasters, but they all pale in comparison to the value offered from Bowflex. Do I think the 552's are for everyone? No, but for those on a budget, they work mighty well!

You keep saying "over time."
I've owned mine for 16 years having bought it back in 2005. It's my main and only source of weight lifting, I use it 4 - 7 days a week and have had literally no issues and till today am so glad that I purchased it.
It saves on over all price and space.

I got the set that goes to 90lbs, and I gotta say, no regrets. Had them for years. Dings, some drops (not from great height), and aside from the slight bulkiness, they've been great performers. 9/10 would by again.

“You, and the guy she told you not to worry about” brilliant!!!

These were a real life saver for me during pandemic. One issue Coop didn't cover is that the ends aren't very comfortable when you're setting up for a press with them on your legs. They're not totally flat and aren't wide, so they kind of dig into you. They also don't feel great when you have them resting on your shoulders (for leg exercises) due to how the plates aren't uniform. All things you can get used to, so probably not a dealbreaker for most people.

I've had these for years, the rubber on the handles is still nice. The dial isn't as smooth anymore and now takes some finesse to change sometimes.

I own the original MACH 1 set from over 17 years ago and they are still going strong, those round lockin pieces never wore down and I put plenty of use on them. Another bonus I should mention for anyone not sure if they should get them, Bowflex has the best customer service I have experienced. I loved my set so much I have recently replaced them with a newer version of the same exact set.

I have these for 16 years and I still use them every day. Mine are Nautilus, but they look the same. They are really sturdy.

I've had the 1090's for many years and they've worked great! Huge space saver/value for my garage gym. I've also been careful not to drop them, and as a result, they're still going strong through close to a decade of powerlifting accessory training.

I have both the 552’s & the 1090’s. I’ve had them for 4 years and use them about 4-5x a week. I never had an issue with any of the weight plates dropping. Yes they r a bit bulky but it gets the job done.

When I was selling equipment I generally told people to get the 1090’s if they wanted more durability, but the 552’s are a solid deal for the average user.

I've had my 552s and 1090s for years and they are great! The Bowflex stand really makes the switching weights easier between sets.

I bought a used pair with the stand for only $200 only 2 months before the pandemic and they've really really helped me stay in shape for the passed near year and a half.

I absolutely love mine. Pulled me through the pandemic. Just treat them like the plastic that they are and they will last for a long time. Don’t drop them is what I’m saying. If you treat them right, they will treat you right. Great purchase.

I've had these for a very long time and mine are fine. I've always been careful not to drop them and I'm careful with them because they're plastic and it just stands to reason that you can't throw them around. They have a very small footprint even with the stand and I've really gotten my money's worth out of these. So, I have these and a rack full of 55-75 lb dumbells. The bowflex 552 set replaces a 5-50 rack of dumbbells for me.

I never seen these fall out before, an Ive dropped mine REAL hard, " DO NOT DROP THEM" other than that they work great for a quick home gym well worth the money for me, but I need to step up to the heavier set now.

I've had these for ~10 years. At the time, there weren't many options. I've since upgraded to a full dumbbell rack. But, these guys are now in the office for a quick set during meetings. I don't regret the purchase, but there is so much more on the market these days.

I’ve had these for about a year now and my only regret is not getting the 10-90 lbs version instead. These simply don’t cut it if you want to get the most out of a compact product especially for leg workouts. Definitely great quality and I have no complaints about the product itself.

I’ve had these for close to two years now and don’t regret them. They actually went on sale pre-pandemic a few times and snagged them at $200 for the pair of 552’s which i think is an absolute bargain. I had to add a pair of loadable dumbbells for higher weights, which isn’t as convenient as the ease of use with the 552s. There was a time when I moved where the dumbbell got stuck in the holder but seems like there’s a video on how to solve that issue.

All that said, with where I am now, if they were to break I would probably just go for a set of iron masters

I have had these in the past and did like them. Very easy to use and will last a long time if you take proper care of them. My biggest issue was the length. I hated how a light weight was just as long as a large weight. But overall they were a great set of DB
