Did you know the world's largest ant colony spans 3,700 miles (6,000 km) across Europe?
Meet the Argentine ant, an invasive species originally from South America.
These ants have formed supercolonies wherever they've been introduced - blending neighboring colonies into massive networks.
In Europe, one supercolony stretches from Italy to Spain, with millions of interconnected nests and billions of cooperating ants.
And what's fascinating, is that Ants from opposite ends of this colony recognize each other as family.
Researchers have suggested that this supercolony might even span oceans.
A single global supercolony.
Closely related ants have been found not just living across Europe, but also in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hawaii and California. These ants originated in South America some 100 years ago, before spreading around the world – in part via cargo on ships.
