The way I think about it is, the hotdog/sausage itself came first. The bun was created to complement the hot dog and allow for further customization. A sandwich is a combination of meats and bread comprised in a deliberate way. It’s a creation of its own. You can create a sandwich out of almost any bread, no matter the shape. You’re not gonna put a sausage onto a slice of sourdough and call it a hotdog right ? It’s the same reason we don’t call burgers a sandwich. It’s made with a bun specifically for hamburgers. Sandwich is not a category it’s its own independent thing

Sandwich is an umbrella term that covers hot dogs.

Just like how rectangle is an umbrella term for all shapes that are quadrilateral with 4 right angles, which includes squares.

I'm a centrist on this. Like fine, I can agree that being classified as a sandwich is perfectly acceptable. But also, it's a hot dog. And if you handed me something you referred to as a "hotdog sandwich", I would not expect to receive a genericly/traditionaly prepared hot dog.
