Edit: yes i meant a bratwurst, that’s just what they advertised it as. I hadn’t eaten all day and waited 2 hrs to get into a concert, it was the kind that If you left you had to line up again, so I was on survival instinct mode 🙈. Never made that mistake again

From someone who lives in NYC stay away from the carts that don’t have prices on it. They will overcharge you

In 2010 I spent 3 days at a conference on 55th near Broadway. The hot dog cart across the street was $1.50 for a hot dog and $1.00 for a can of soda and I bought that combo two days in a row. On the third day, I only had $2.00 cash so I said I would just take the hot dog. The owner said "you take the soda, I know you'll come back and pay me later." Which I did, but that level of trust shocked me.

Carts are legally supposed to have the prices posted. Many don’t. Many will also change the price to charge you as much as they think you would be willing to pay. There’s no cart in all of nyc that charges $9 a hot dog as a normal price. Even ball park hotdogs are only $7 at Citi field and those are famous for being marked up.

I don't eat anywhere that doesn't have prices. I once asked at a restaurant and the waiter loudly said, so others could hear him, if I had to ask I couldn't afford it. I started cracking up laughing under my breath at him, got up and people were looking while I pulled out $8, 700 out of my pocket. He wasn't expecting that. We just walked out as he was asking us to come back. Nope...
