Super Typhoon Yagi, Asia's strongest storm of the year, made landfall in China's Hainan province on September 6, bringing powerful winds of up to 234 km/h (145 mph) and heavy rain. The storm, which previously killed 16 people in the Philippines, forced school closures, flight cancellations, and widespread evacuations in the South China Sea region. Yagi, the second-most powerful tropical cyclone globally in 2024, uprooted trees and damaged infrastructure, with rescue efforts underway in affected areas. This is the most severe storm in Hainan since Typhoon Rammasun in 2014, which caused significant destruction across southern China.
