Asia's strongest Typhoon of the year has hit Vietnam after sweeping through China's Hainan island, where at least two people were killed.

Thousands of trees have been uprooted, with ships and boats swept out to sea, according to Vietnamese state media.

The storm hit Hai Phong and Quang Ninh provinces with winds of up to 203 km/h (126 mph) on Saturday morning, the Indo-Pacific Tropical Cyclone Warning Center said.

In Hai Phong, news agency AFP reports metal roof sheets and commercial sign boards were seen flying across the city.

I am an American tourist currently in Da Nang, Central Coast of VN. For a week, the government sent out regular storm warnings and updates. They also deployed workers to trim trees, especially those near power lines, etc. In the end, the storm missed us but we got a bit of crazy strong winds. Thankfully, there's minimal damage thanks to the advanced warnings and preparation done by the government. I am extremely grateful and impressed. And yes, my heart and prayers go out to everyone who's been affected by Yagi🙏🏻🙏🏻

I am a new tourist to Vietnam recently. And what really impressed me is the solidarity of Vietnamese people here. They often help each other in any situation and that is what we in America should learn.

Thank you all! I am Vietnamese and currently living in Hanoi. When I was a child, my mother often told me that in the Year of the Dragon, it usually rains a lot and there are often storms. It was true; in the Dragon years, it rained heavily, but this is the first time I have experienced such a big storm. In the North of Vietnam, there are usually fewer storms compared to the Central region. Now, the storm has passed, and we are working on recovering from the aftermath.

We, here in the Philippines, were lucky it didn't intensify until it had passed over northern Luzon. It still caused 13 deaths here in the Philippines. Then, as it crossed the west Philippine Sea, it intensified into a super typhoon and hit Hainan very hard, with 200km/h winds. That took some of the steam out of it before it reached Vietnam, luckily, or it could have been worse.

My hometown is in HaiPhong, right in the center of the typhoon. I haven't been able to contact my family since it hit. All I can do is watch the news for updates. There's no electricity, no phone signal, and no water there. I'm feeling really anxious. I reached out to my friends, hoping they could help by calling my parents, but there's no phone signal for them either. I just hope everything will be okay.

Mother Nature at her most fierce. It's a reminder of how small we are in the grand scheme.

The Typhoon has passed now. It seems Ha Noi wasn't damaged as mcuh as the typhoon ended after it came near. A lot of trees have been blown onto the roads!!!! Other cities facing major power cut outs.

I lived in a small town in the North. It is located far from the ocean, maybe over 100 km, and there are mountains around. So, it has been rare for storms to come to this area. But this time, my friend sent me a picture of 30-year-old trees in front of my old house that had fallen. It is really the biggest storm to hit the North(or maybe all over Viet Nam ) in more than 30 years.
