I've been using Files for over a year and I really like how it looks, but it can be so slow that I often revert File Explorer. Saw this video yesterday and tried File Pilot and OMFG it's a game changer. So fast, so intuitive. Instant switch, I'll buy it when I get paid next. Thanks for the comparison!

I changed to Directory Opus a few years back and have been happy with my choice. I made the choice during the time that advertisements were being considered for display in the file explorer. I didn't want to deal with it, and I wanted more flexibility in customizing how I worked with files.

I remember asking Raymond Chen at PDC 2008 if there would ever be a replacement for Explorer (The MacOS Finder had just gotten an upgrade I believe) and he explained that it wouldn't and couldn't really happen. I'm happy to see some alternatives. Especially ones that don't require a registry key change just to see the old context menu. :)

Files is so slow, much slower than built in file explorer. But File Pilot looks very good, it's so fast.
I'm currently using Explorer++, I'm very excited for File Pilot's stable release.

Great presentation, Scott. 👍 I weren't aware about these two tools. While most people have less need to manipulate local files nowadays, more developers and enthusiasts should know about these alternative file managers. They offer tons of built-in functionality. I like that File Pilot works also really well with the keyboard (the way I like to use file managers). Almost all features have a keyboard shortcut. As for me, I've been using Total Commander for over 30 years, and I love the two-pane design for productive file management. I've gotten so used to TC (know all its keyboard shortcuts, etc.) that I don’t want to switch even if TC look a little bit outdated. On Linux, I use Midnight Commander. My love for the two-pane layout started with the old Norton Commander and later DOS Navigator (which was popular in Eastern Europe).

I started with Norton Commander and clones, I was using Midnight Commander on Linux and on Windows 11 I use... Far Manager. Can't get better than this :D

I like how Files crushed at the end. It looks good but it is very slow and crushes often. File Pilot seems to be the best option currently and the Beta version will be free forever.
