As an addiction specialist, Dr. G works very closely with Opiate addiction and know's the how's and why's of what opiates feel like.

Opiates or Opioid medication are synthesized from Heroin. Heroin is produced from Morphine which comes from Opium and originally comes from Poppy plants.

Opioids or the entire Opiates category act as a pain reducer in our bodies. In a medical and prescription setting, Opiates are prescribed for pain reduction for surgeries and acute pain. It can also produce Dopamine in your brain which triggers a euphoric effect. Opiates have also been known to cause some reduction in anxiety and can be considered an anxiolytic drug.

Unfortunately, prolonged use of Opiates can lead to Opiate addiction and if overused can cause overdosing.

I used to overdose on percocet regularly. I would stay awake as long as i could to feel the effects until it knocked me on my ass. I remember not being satisfied until i was on the verge of suffocating, feeling my respiratory system shutting down and having to remind myself to breathe. I never knew I had a problem, but the cravings were like the feeling you get being thirsty for water.

I get what this Dr is saying about "people take it to detach from problems in life" etc, but I feel compelled to clear this up.
You can say the same for alcohol, so I want to stress that the opiate is as much physical pain reducer, as emotional pain reducer. But it's more calming and soothing and numbing (you won't get many people fighting on opiates Vs say alcohol)..
And it's very good at it, and with all the traumas increasing young people go through today (you're jobs are going, automation will take the rest, global warming will melt you, the oil well run dry, be a man and woman at the same time and anyone else is a hater....)
No wonder then, mixed in with the debt, broken homes, some need the pain to stop, just like cancer patient. Some might argue suicide is when people can't cope with the pain anymore.
Again, opiates are waiting in the wings, easily available up front, then usually taken away, then given again, and this start-stop attitude only serves to reinforce the "ain't life better with them"
But this opinion doesn't last much beyond a few years. Show me a happy opiate abuser years in, it isn't there. It's not just the addictions, the underlying issues remain unresolved, it's not just the long term health complications....
Something far more scary begins to take place, something long since dismissed by Western science. Something that quantum physics is finally beginning to talk about, as if a new discovery, when really they are talking about the same thing under a new name. They may call it "the observer" and religious people may call it "the soul" but whatever you choose to call it, these drugs (and others) eventually let "something else in" and turn the nicest, most caring person, into someone unrecognisable... Even if you don't believe in any of that, and say "naaa, it's just the effects of the drugs on the brain" - isn't that reason enough to at least try not become that.
I get for many, the pain today is too great to consider that years away, but that's a complex society problem, not a drug issue.

Don't forget that u aren't just going to sleep. Reaching the almost OD state is an intense euphoric state that is chased all the time because no worrys no anxiety no anything can get u while ur almost ODing. It's heaven followed by hell when withdrawals kick in

Thanks. I'm in end stage COPD and Morphine Sulfate was prescribed for me but I have been scared to try it because it is an Opiate and I really did not know what to sort of expect. After hearing this it seems it might be helpful so may try a drop or two...

Doctors should be forced to take opiates and than go through withdrawals so they can rationalize on the patients part

his explanation about “opiates” and “opioids” and also about “GABA” and about their mechanism is 80% wrong.
No offense, but anyone who has medical education most know these things much more accurate.

his mistakes are as follow:
1- “opiates” and “opioids” are not synthetized form Heroin!. They are 1st: directly (opiates, for example: Morphine, codeine) or 2nd: indirectly (semisynthetic opioids, for example: Heroin) extracted from opium which is in turn extracted from “Papaver somniferum” plant. (There are also 3rd group drugs which are completely synthetic and made in laboratory (for example: fentanyl, Paracetamol (acetaminophen), Metamizole (Analgin) ).
Heroin (or diacetylmorphine) is a semisynthetic drug which is produced from morphine (by chemical modification).

2- He says that “opiates” or “opioids” are …
Opiates and opioids are not the same to use “or” for them!. “Opiates” are drugs which are directly derived from opium, but “opioids” are semisynthetic and synthetic drugs which are created in order to simulate the effects of opiates. They are chemically different. By the way “opiates” are not the category which include “opioids”!. “opiate is not a category!. The category is "Narcotic analgesics"

3- “opioids” and “opiates” ARE NOT STIMULANTS, but they are INHIBITORs. its Wise versa!

4- “opioids” and “opiates” DO NOT INCREASE “GABA”, but they inhibit “GABA” receptors which are inhibitors of “ANTINOCICEPTIVE SYSTEM” which is in turn responsible for inhibition of perception and appreciation of “pain” (these drugs inhibit the inhibitor!). “Opioids” and “opiates” Also by inhibiting “GABA” which is inhibitor of DOPAMINE release, cause release of DOPAMINE (again they inhibit the inhibitor!), and it is worthy to mention: the inhibitory effect of “opiates” and “opioids” on “GABA” causes anti-anxiety effect, not by “GABA” increase or stimulation. Its Wise versa.

5- These drugs ARE NOT “DEPRESSANTs”, they are SEDATIVE – ANALGESIC drugs. This is a different category!

6- these drugs only cause superficial sleep, they never cause deep true sleep by themselves

This is not entirely accurate... You said that pharmaceutical opioids are synthesized from heroin and heroin is synthesized from opium. You are only half correct. Heroin IS indeed synthesized from opium, after separating morphine base. Morphine base is then acetylated via acetic anhydride and then further refined and dried into powder. There are four main grades of heroin from crude Mexican black tar all the way up to pure white number 4 heroin.

Opium, sourced mainly from Afghanistan, is shipped into the country and separated into different alkaloids to meet the quota for each pharmaceutical opioid product we have. Codeine is either synthesized into dihydrocodeine, hydrocodone or kept in sulphate, hcl, or phosphate form. Thebaine is synthesized to oxycodone and some goes to make
Morphine gets synthesized into hydromorphone, oxymorphone or kept in its natural form as morphine hcl or morphine sulphate.
You get the picture...

Furthermore... Opioids/opiates are not classified as a stimulant. Opioids cause a marked decrease in blood pressure, respiration and also suppress norepinephrine in the brain leading to sedation(the nod). These effects classify such a substance as either (sedative/depressant).
Just wanted to clear that up! Take care!
