I just read that she was clean for a year when she tragically was killed in a hit in run accident. I'm so heartbroken. All that hard work she did.. I hope she found peace in her year of sobriety before she passed.

That best friend’s mother is pure evil. To give something like that to a 13 year old and have them pushing it is unconscionable.

She tragically died in 2017, in Florida, in a hit and run, She was driving on a turnpike when her cell phone fell out of her car. Karissa pulled over and got out of her car to look for her phone. She was hit by a passing car as she exited her car. The driver who hit Karissa did not bother to stop. Life can be cruel sometimes : she overdosed multiple times and survived, only to die shortly after in a stupid ( and cruel ) accident.

Childhood trauma is number 01 for mental health issues!
More supports needed for people struggling. ❤

i think the thing that’s so special about sylvia isn’t just that we followed her recovery, i think her motherly energy is really soothing to the patients. the second she takes karissa in her arms, she’s already calling her “baby.” she has such a softness to her that helps some of these suffering people take their walls down. sylvia is one of those people sent by god to make the world a better place.

Child abusers don’t even know how much they take from the children they abuse, it literally ruins their entire lives. It’s horrible.

I feel so bad for Karissa. She was molested and knew deep down that she would be rejected for her sexuality and had no one to talk to about any of it. Super sad. Good luck Karissa!

Sylvia is such an angel. I re-watch her old episode on occasion. She has grown so much and is incredibly compassionate towards everyone she helps.

Psilocybin saved my life. I was addicted to heroin for 15 years and after Psilocybin treatment I will be 3 years clean in November. I have zero cravings.
This is something that truly needs to be more broadly used in addiction treatment.

The fact that a stranger made her more comfortable than her family in the intervention was pretty telling.

I’m a former addict and current addiction counselor and the worst part about these situations IMO is the impossible situation that the parents/loved ones are put into on a daily basis. People may say “I would never give my child money to support their habit” but the truth is most of these parents/loved ones have no clue how to deal with the constant lies, terrible behavior, etc so they seem to take little wins like “my daughter won’t have to sell herself tonight to get her fix bc I gave her money” just for them to feel like they’re “helping”. The key to being a support system for an addict is making and maintaining BOUNDARIES IMO.

Really sad to see this woman has passed. I want to point out, as a SA survivor from ages 5-12, that it completely changes the course of one’s life. Permanently. It almost always leads to risky behavior, seeking love and living in a state of confusion, fight or flight at the ready 24/7.

Once one understands what exactly happened and why they chose behaviors to cope as a youth, they can start to heal. It’s a process, I’m 34 and still healing but going on 3 years sober. I used 68 bags in 1 shot at my worst and had 3 near fatal OD’s so that’s a huge accomplishment for me. It can be done, prayers for this family!
