Drone footage showed severe flooding in the Russia-controlled Ukrainian town of Nova Kakhovka, hours after a torrent of water burst through a dam on the Dnipro River that was destroyed on Tuesday.

Ukraine accused Russia of blowing up the Nova Kakhovka dam in a deliberate war crime. The Kremlin said it was Ukraine that had sabotaged the dam.

On the Russia-controlled bank of the Dnipro, the Moscow-installed mayor of Nova Kakhovka said water levels had risen to 11 metres and residents were evacuated.

I agree as a hydro civil engineer. Dams are EXCEEDINGLY robust. That's because water is a heavy, sneaky enemy that destroys everything given a chance and in time. For one to fail like this required significant effort and specific expertise -- underwater demo teams with access to dam blueprints who essentially operated as special forces under the cover of darkness. Thats my speculation, anyway.

It might ss well have collapsed due to wear and tear brought on by war.

As a Ukrainian teenager, this makes me very angry and heartbroken at the same time.

If a person is going to walk on a road, does that person says, “hmm the road is too nice and dry and clean, let’s flood it first, then I will walk on it”
If Ukraine plans to cross the area for the counter offensive…why would it creates an obstacle for itself…
People with even the littlest common sense knows the answer who did it..

Russian could just open the floodgates anytime Ukrainian army try to cross the river since they were in control of the dam. After the flood subsided, Ukrainian can cross the river without further risk of Russian opening the floodgates while they are crossing the river.

I suggest people look at that location on google maps. And see the extent of the flooding.

To those who are willing to listen, there was no purpose for this, those who in Ukraine must flee to the places that do not practice war in body or word. Blind eyes will continue to harass the land for awhile longer.

I know most of you are pro ukraine but why would russia flood areas they control? Crimea gets their water from this dam and Russia took crimea since 2014

@The Guardian News Never, ever refer to the occupied territory again as 'Russia-Ukraine'. It is Ukraine. Only Ukraine.

Kovalchuk considered flooding the river. The Ukrainians, he said, even conducted a test strike with a HIMARS launcher on one of the floodgates at the Nova Kakhovka dam, making three holes in the metal to see if the Dnieper’s water could be raised enough to stymie Russian crossings but not flood nearby villages.

The test was a success, Kovalchuk said, but the step remained a last resort. He held off.

Washington Post on Dec. 29.
In an interview with the Maj. Gen. Andriy Kovalchuk, who led the counteroffensive, the operation to liberate Kherson.
The Ukrainians, he said, even conducted a test strike with a HIMARS launcher on one of the floodgates at the Nova Kakhovka dam, making three holes in the metal to see if the Dnipro’s water could be raised enough to stymie Russian crossings, but not flood nearby villages.
The strike on the dam was successful, he said, but its destruction remained a last resort, which was ultimately avoided.
