US President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum from 25 percent to 50 percent, while threatening to "shut down" the country's auto industry. The "only thing that makes sense" is for Canada to join the United States as a 51st state, he said. "This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear."

All the controversy about Canada becoming a US state is rather foolish.
Please do not dignify this ridiculous proposal by thinking that it even remotely possible. Certainly not in the foreseeable future.
Examine the US Constitution and realize that the process of a sovereign country joining the USA as a State is not even considered in the US Constitution, which only covers the admission of territories to Statehood as part of the USA.
Now, there are situations in which countries can join together to form a new sovereign nation. But, apparently, one nation cannot be just be incorporated into another nation - it would have to be a union of mutual consent, where two countries would agree to unite, through a treaty or referendum, that is ratified by the citizens and representatives of both nations.
The new nation would then have to be recognized as a new & independent state with its own, new, and distinct government and territory.
The process of trying to annex even a part of another country's sovereign territory would be an act of war.
Go and ask Vladimir Putin the likely outcome of that type of action.
And, more to the point, ask yourself what kind of person would think it is even morally and legally proper to consider such a course of action.
As with most things, it seems that Trump has not done any homework before irresponsibly running off at the mouth.

The tariffs are one subject. As a Canadian, I am more concerned about the rhetoric about taking over our country one way or the other. The simple fact is, when Donald speaks, he gets a standing ovation. So, not only Donald wants to take over Canada, obviously. This friendship won't heal in my lifetime.

In 2004, after Democrat John Kerry lost the US presidential election to Republican George HW Bush, there was an idea going around that some of the US blue/liberal states (California, Oregon, Washington, & New England states, etc.) could join and become part of Canada (for lower healthcare and prescription drug costs, etc.). The larger Canada would become "Canamerica."
