Trump confirms Canada tariffs come into effect Saturday, “may not” include oil

U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters he expects to decide by the end of the day Thursday whether his threat of sweeping 25 per cent tariffs will apply to Canadian oil imports.

“We may or may not, we’re going to make that determination probably tonight on oil,” he said.

“We’ll see. It depends on what the price is. If the oil is properly priced, if they treat us properly – which they don’t.”

He had earlier been asked if energy imports from Canada would be exempt and replied, “oil is going to have nothing to do with it as far as I’m concerned.”

Trump also suggested that the tariffs may rise “with time.”

I am glad Canada will be forced to diversify its trading partners. WWII was a long time ago. Its time to leave the US behind.

Canada needs to become self sufficient! We are richer than America! We have more oil, more precious metals, more fresh water(this is a big one.)

@RealDonaldTrump:
1. If you don't need our oil and gas, then WHY are you buying 65% of all of Canada's oil and gas production?
2. If you don't need our products, then WHY are you buying 57% of all of British Columbia's exports?
3. If you don't want a trade deficit, then sell more.
4. A trade deficit has nothing to do with tariffs.
5. Tariffs do nothing to reduce your inflation.
6. ALL of your products are going to be more expensive for Americans.

So why should Canada spend over a billion dollars to protect the border if the tariffs are still on.

If Trump doesn't tariff oil, Canada should slap a 25% export tariff on it.

He does not want to touch oil because price at the pump will go up immediately for US consumers.

Trump also plans to put tariffs on China and I think it's time that Canada and China make a trade agreement and we should also include Mexico. We cannot have 70% of our trade with United States and have us being treated this way. We really need to diversify ASAP.

Buying more from a country than they buy from you, a trade deficit, is NOT a subsidy.

The irony that he talks about fentanyl being part of the reasoning, when he recently pardoned the guy who ran one of the largest online illegal drug market.

Unless people sell their Qardun Token before launch, this is going to sell out instantly after it reaches mainstream media

Ok so no tariffs on oil. We should sell it to them at market value then. Trump doesn't need the discount we sell it to them for

During his first term, Trump negotiated and called it the “best deal ever” at the signing of the Mexico –USA-Canada trade deal known as USMCA, which replaced NAFTA.
Trump is now admitting that USMCA is “NOT THE BEST DEAL EVER” by wanting to put a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada.

One thing I've never understood about the so-called border crisis. In most cases (Canada/US included), there never really is much of an "exiting the country" customs process. Border control is typically all about stopping things from entering a country, not stopping them from leaving. If the US is worried about illegal immigrants and fentanyl entering the country, shouldn't it be the primary responsibility of *US* customs to prevent it? Why is this being spun into Canada's failure to secure the border, when in fact it is that of the US?
