I can't say it enough please look into Tamora Pierce and her fantasy books. She is perfect for a mood reader with so many series and has amazing characters/ friendships in all the novels. I think you'd really enjoy reading any of her works.

I'm a big berserk fan but man it's hard to get into. I'd recommend watching the 90's 20-some-odd episode anime if you want to see where the story goes next. The story definitely has triggering subject material but (from what I remember) the anime depicts them less graphically and is easier to skip if troubling.

Granted, the arc covered is basically the prologue that the first volume hints at.

I'm so happy that you're going to read The Neverending Story. I loved the movie as a kid (I still love it today), then I discoverd the book years ago as an adult, and it is one of my favorite books of all time since then.
