Fish Hydrolysate - Fermented Fish Fertilizer

This batch is based on 2 large wild king salmon I caught. The fillets went into the smoker, freezer, and our bellies. The fish carcasses went into a bucket with molasses and water and allowed to ferment with naturally incurring lacto bacteria. It will stink for 1-3 weeks but then become a wonderful fertilizer for your soil and plants.

A buddy started giving me walleye carcasses and I just kept dumping them in a 55 gal. steel barrel with water. I did add some urine at one point. It sat for a year before I ventured to use it. Believe it still smelled pretty rank. Wear rubber gloves and don't spill even a drop on your clothes. I didn't dilute it nearly enough cause I managed to burn 30 tomato plants and several pepper plants on first application. Fortunately I had plenty of extra plants to replace them with. So lesson dilute, dilute, dilute.

You can dissolve fishbones with vinegar. 1:10 . And that solution can be added 1:1000 . Great P fertilizer. same goes for eggshells (Ca) or carbonized/burnt animal bones. (P)

You should use dissolved boiled potatoes. It feeds a wider range of microorganisms!

The recipe I watched and are going to try, uses leaf mould and not molasses. He also used a water seal so that the gas can escape but the air can't get in. This process took 3 - 6 months (preferably a year!).

Have you been putting fish fertilizer on these plants ? They look fabulous.

You could drill a small hole in the side of the bucket at high level and tape a much smaller piece of mesh over it to take care of off gassing.

That leaves the lid in one piece to keep out rain and critters.

Place liquid in a medium size muffin pan to freeze them like pucks. keep them in a ziplock back in a freezer and pull them out as needed.

This will beat just burying the frames. I get mixed results the old way, sometimes it attracts root rot sometimes not... but I think this way will avoid that

Does it work with seaweed. When I upgrade to a ute I'll put loads of seaweed in the back of it and make some seaweed fertiliser. I am not a fan of it tho

You must have any flies in your area, if I were to use that screen the entire surface area would be covered with flies instantly

Great explanation.. thank you 🤍.. my question is .. what's wrong with sulfured molasses?.. i ask because i cant tell if the molasses i buy has sulfur or not... It's not mentioned anywhere on the labels of the products available to me

How much npk do yo think you are getting from pail full of fish?? Why don’t you get it tested for nutrients? Snake oil
