Short lecture introducing chemical thermodynamics.

Thermodynamics is the study of the flow of energy and matter between systems during physical processes. Chemical processes of interest include gas expansion, phase transitions, solution mixing, and chemical reactions. Physical properties of interest include temperature, volume, pressure, heat, work, internal energy, entropy, enthalpy, and free energy. Classical thermodynamics uses a macroscopic, empirical, top-down approach, whereas statistical mechanics uses a microscopic, theoretical, bottom-up approach.

This course includes chapters discussing gas properties, statistical mechanics, the three laws of thermodynamics, internal energy, enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs and Helmholtz free energy, phase diagrams, liquid-liquid and solid-liquid solutions, reaction equilibrium, and electrochemistry. Also included are chemical kinetics chapters discussing the kinetic theory of gases, reaction rates, and reaction mechanisms.

Just wanted to thank you for these videos, I started watching these during my B.S. in Chemistry. I'm currently a Physical/Inorganic PhD student and I saw this pop up through my inbox and thought I would pay my respects. And for all of the undergrads reading this, don't ever give up on your passion! If you put in the work, there are amazing people like this that are here to help you through the process of learning.

I nearly started crying tears of relief when I saw you had a playlist for thermodynamics. You got me through quantum chemistry, and I have no doubt you'll get me through thermo too. Thank you thank you THANK YOU!!!

I'd like to personally thank you for your effort and clariness during classes. Your videos are really helpful for a B.Sc. Chemistry student like me. You deserve way more subscribers.

how is statistical mechanics related to the properties of the energy levels of individual molecules related to the laws of thermodynamics?

thanks to this playlist i was able to pass this subject, which i thought was an impossible task, so thank you

In classical thermodynamics, why does top-down behavior on a large scale reveal what will happen to small scale outcomes and what effect does it have on macroscopic outcomes if we don't imply what should happen on small scales?

Thank you for the explanation about thermodynamics I want to ask what is done during the gas expansion/compression process?

Thank you for the information. I would like to ask about the absorption of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and other compounds, could everything/these be digested by our body? Or would something be thrown away and become residu according to the law of thermodynamics?

Thank you sir, I'm sorry, I want to ask sir, why does the thermodynamics of a closed system in a green thirst exchange heat exchange, but there is no exchange of work on the environment?

What connection exists between statistical mechanics and thermodynamics?

Hi there! I would like to thank you for your videos first. However, I still got a question to ask you. Is the thermodynamic part (statistical mechanics) the same as the physics students take? I have already taken the physical chemistry curriculum and want to learn more about statistical mechanics, but I don't really know if these are the same (because I am not in the US so I don't know the content). Is it necessary for me to watch your videos about statistical mechanic part? Or to look for other online courses? Thank you!

Thank you sir for the explanation about thermodynamics
I would like to ask if there is any other relationship between thermodynamics and statistical mechanics other than large changes ?
