To be fair, mechanical pencil is good for hard-line, and a pencil is good for shading

The mechanical pencil is a ton better because even if the lines are thinner, they're bolder and give you the chance of drawing more detail

I can't argue, i started with a pencil like that.

Depends on preference. Greatest artist of our time, Kim Jung Gi, mostly used brushes. Whatever medium you choose continue using it proficiently. Though in the end it really comes down to how good you are as an artist.

At this point I feel like he draws the circle out of pure muscle memory because I don't think he even needs that as guideline anymore (toji is so fine)

A normal pencil is just much more softer and less rougher than a mechanical pencil🤷🏻‍♀️

It's not the pencil, it's the artist

It really depends on which medium suits the style of the artist better.
There’s nothing wrong with using mechanical pencils for your artwork, but they’re mainly suited for architectural/engineering drawings due to their lead being able to produce consistent and precise line works, and traditional working drawings require the highest accuracy possible to present clear and detailed plans.

The #2 pencil had been a traditional graphite tool for many years, and you can still see lots of artists who use them despite the availability of modern and ergonomic pencils in the market. Heck, some would even dare to use them on construction drawings. In my opinion, the results produced by this pencil aren’t bad, but is nowhere near the level of accuracy that the mechanical pencil has. However, I watch ADCartattack, and I relate to him a lot, as we both prefer messy and gritty drawings because you could really feel that the artist had fun creating. Moreover, a single traditional pencil can produce more line type variations than a mechanical pencil.

Like what ADC said, respect the tools that you are using. Work to their strengths and let them guide you along the way. If you prefer clean and precise line work, go for a mechanical pencil, but if you’re a graphite artist, I believe #2 is more of your thing.

Pencil = Good for shading
Mechanical Pencil = Good for line art
Honestly id choose Mechanical cuz it makes art easier but pencil also helps me blend easier

The regular pencil would be good if you sharpened it, because the lines create actual depth and variation.

Both are good in their respected ways

But You can still make a nice gradient using mechanical pencil if you want
