This was a group of intellectual art rock kind of guys who put this together more as performance art than a traditional band. They were pretty subversive, and offered a lot of thought-provoking social commentary and satire in their songs and art and appearance and general demeanor. Their name actually refers to this sort of group philosophy, and is short for "devolution", which said that far from evolving, humankind was actually devolving and going backwards...

About 5 yrs ago Devo came to town for a show. My friends & i were like "Holy shit they still tour !". So we got tickets & went to the show. Went down memory lane & had a blast at the show. After the show we were hanging out bullshitting on the sidewalk by the club. The members of Devo came out, shook hands with everybody, signed some autographs, took pics with people.when they were done they walked 3 blocks over to the hotel they wete staying at. No limo or van to pick them up, they just walked over. How cool & down to earth are these guys !

Classic! Senior year of high school. School dances. Literally bounce dancing. Love Ambers face. This exactly how we felt when this song came on. Devo is awesome!!! 🎶💕🎶

You just have to trust us when we tell you: DEVO is one of the most intelligent bands to have ever performed. Think of them as master-level trolls on the entire music industry...and society in general.

As a nerd, I was obsessed with Devo in high school. The hats they wear are called "energy domes." Devo was sent to warn us about human de-evolution. They usually wear haz-mat suits when they play.

Anything they do needs to get added to Amber's "Eighties weird shit to annoy Rob" playlist.

Finally, some DEVO! The pioneers of nu-wave, and one of the early darlings of MTV! You're going to LOVE this rabbit hole, guys! Though most people remember Devo for this one song, there are many others to check out. "Freedom of Choice", "Girl U Want", "Working in the Coal Mine", and, if you want something REALLY trippy, check out their cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Are U Experienced?" This song practically kicked off the 80s... can you tell?? The hats were designed by the band themselves, who wanted something "geometrical" for their stage shows, and it became one of their trademarks, like KISS's makeup. Thanks for all you do from an 80s baby! (Actually, I was 11 when this came out.)

The channel needed videos and artists and record companies were willing (and later, willing to pay big $$$) to give them what they asked for. If not for MTV, a lot of the crazy New Wave music of the era may never have gone mainstream. I loved being a teen in the 80's!!

"Devo" is short for "Devolution". The members of the band are supposed to represent devolved Humans in a dystopian future. It's imagined, that they may have devolved due to automation, robotics, or AI, so they are costumed and carry themselves accordingly.

Devo approached everything with humour. You’d be surprised how many younger bands count them as influential. I think you guys would really enjoy Gary Numan Cars, very synth and weird but legit creative.

We loved this song so much that my husband wanted our first dog to be a Whippet so we could name him Devo. Such a sense of humor! This will STILL get every 80’s person on the dance floor everywhere every time!

This was one of the big MTV standouts during that time. No one knew what to make of the video and costumes, but everyone wants to dance when “Whip It” comes on.

They have a great cover of the Rolling Stones "I can't get no satisfaction." Hopefully this is the year Devo makes it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

DEVO was NEW WAVE. Their music was so much deeper than most people realized. It was packed with social and political commentary rarely found in new wave music. Unlike their punk brethren, their messages were subtle rather than blatant.
