Easy way to make a (replica) lightsaber

Ever wonder how to make a decent looking light saber?

Wonder no more! This week I show you how to make a light saber out of plumbing bits available at your local hardware store (I went to Home Depot)

Items you'll need:
1 1/4" Pop up basin drain
1 1/2" Extension tube
4 rubber bands
1 1/4" Slip nut and washer
2 packs(of 4) O rings
1 1/4" Slip joint washers (preferrably black)
1 3/4" Hole cover
Black magic marker (unless you gotblack slip joint washers)

I found that using hairties on the hilt/grip part makes it not only look cool, but feel much more comfortable

There's definitely room inside to put some lightsaber guts. It's almost entirely open on the inside for about 1" around and about 60-70 percent of the way down (right until you get to the shaft of the whole cover). You could also cut the shaft of the whole cover with a hack saw if you needed some more space.

It's possible, but you'd need to cut out some of the drain, since the center has some metal in the way. And of course you'd need a width that matches your basin drain opening.

The laser is special effects. There's a cardboard tube in place for getting it lined up right, and then you add the effect in after you're done filming.

Nice! I had seen those basin drains at work and thought, say they would make good lightsaber hilts. *G*

Pretty sure you could, but it would probably require additional modifications. I don't think the center of the pipe is open all the way down, so you'd need to cut that out before a dowel rod would work properly.

I would also use something other than superglue to secure it, since if you're using it for stuff it'd probably just pop right out. Perhaps some gorilla glue or epoxy? I've never actually tried securing wood to metal before though, so that's just a guess.

Whoa. I was skeptical at first when you laid out all of those pieces, but it was so cool seeing them be put together and ending as a hilt :O

I don't know if they were from a jeep or not, but yeah, his lightsaber was basically a flashbulb handle with with the rubber part of a windshield wiper around the base for a grip and a D-ring riveted to the bottom so it could be hung from a belt. Darth Vader's was the same, only a different flashbulb model. The wiper blades were originally glued on, but they kept coming loose so they ended up having to rivet them in place.

as a student film maker, these videos im watching have been helpful, id probably drill out a hole near the top to insert a chroma key blade fitting for collision when shooting then in post put in all those nice pretty blades

It's mostly hollow. There is a piece you would have to cut out to put any kind of electrical stuff into it though.
