I’ve been trying for 11 years. Been on tons of hiring list but fall short. Currently on 4 now and I recently went back to school and took Fire 1, Fire 2 and EMT. I’m not going to lie and say I didn’t get discouraged because I deff did. But it’s just something about this career that keeps me driven. There are a lot of fire departments where I live that only require 18yo, driver's license, and Diploma/GED. I've seen a ton of people get hired on a fire department within days of deciding they wanted to give it a shot.
Edit: I'm not talking about volunteer departments btw

I live in Arizona and it was funny I met two firefighters in one night and ever since then I have been feeling inspired to pursue it. Going to start physically preparing before I even start school.
