instead of just crashing the whole computer windows could just log an error and not load the bad driver, but in this case it's probably better to have the computer offline instead of it being online without a critical security driver.

Some Day something is going to happen that disables the entire World's Internet, maybe for Days, maybe for Weeks or maybe we'll need to totally rebuild it which would take a very long time. It feels like we live in a glass house tech wise these Days, and we're all throwing rocks around inside it. We rely way too much on something that's way too fragile- I feel like it's going to lead to a lot of suffering when something happens. My guess is a massive Solar Flare like the Karington event, but it'll probably come from some totally unexpected place instead- hard to plan for the unexpected.

The root issue was a botched software upgrade from a cyber security firm called Crowdstrike, not Microsoft. If any media is stating it was Microsoft, it is incorrect and very poor journalism. It was a botched software update to the client software that guards that piece of hardware its on and reports back to the company's server for that cybersecurity service. The analogy is upgrading the security system in your home but accidentally knocking out the power to your house and thus every device that was connected to that power.
