This applies to far more than music. Excellent discussion!

This idea of watching yourself closely to find out exactly what is causing the mistake, and then adjusting something to correct it is really a powerful idea. I discovered this idea myself a few months ago is it's really helping me play better. The trouble is that I've been playing for more than 55 years! I wish someone had told me this long ago.

I’m also a weightlifter, and this advice is SO true. Something will go wrong in the lift and I naturally want to throw the barbell down in anger and frustration.. but the step back objective person viewer is the only way to move beyond the error (and trust me you can get stuck with a mistake for a long time!). The other thing is to DO THE THING. The fear is real (trying to make the lift on a competition platform with all eyes on you…yikes)… the way I’ve overcome it is just knowing that I have hours of practice under my belt, and I think to myself- just follow the process I’ve done thousands of times before.

I began playing last May, and my grandpa pointed me towards you, and may I just say Justin, your simple wording and how you explain details and how you throw an example in with what you’re talking about, is INCREDIBLY anxiety reducing and helpful for a newbie.
I’ve watched many of your videos, done numerous of your lessons and now I’m beginning your music theory course, but the same core thing throughout all of these videos and lessons is those key things I’ve listed above that call out to me, and I just appreciate the hell outta you man. Thank you for everything you do. Great video. I plan on scooping that book next time I can.

This is great advice as ever Justin! Another psychological definition of 'the fear of fear' is 'the self fulfilling prophecy'.. As in, "Oh! I'm scared of being scared!" and the answer is "You already ARE!!" 🤣.. not funny when it happens, actually. Now the following is about violin, but the same applies to guitar. A great teacher, Kato Havas wrote a book called 'Stage Fright'.. Most guitarists would be able to get something from this work. The chapters are all called "Fear of (something)".. One is "Fear of shifting".. You know, when you have to play around fret 0 to fret 5, and you want to do a tiny bit around fret 12, then back down pronto.. Technically, backswing with L. arm will help, prior to the shift, but psychologically, people can try this. Put your index finger of each hand on the ends of the fretboard. Then close your eyes. Keep the distance the same but move your hands away from the guitar, or get a friend to move the instrument. Open your eyes, and see just how short the damn thing really is. You can especially notice this when you see the unbolted neck of a Strat or Tele. A little piece of wood. No big deal. I'll shut up now. Nice one Justin! 🎶🌟👍

Great lesson!👍 5:35 ‘We have nothing to fear except fear itself.’ ~ as in the famous quote attributed to past U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Very interesting lesson. The psychology sure makes sense when it's broken down this way. Thank you.

Great advice. Positive thinking is a lot better than picturing the audience in there underwear (most of the time).
