He went through the extra effort so the salesman wouldn't have to feel bad

My sympathy to the salesman. It must have been a shock. And my sympathy for the mother. We never know what another person is thinking. So sad.

It's like a switch turns off in the brain. They start doing complicated stuff with vigor and excitement and then poof, they gone. Everyone is left in shock bc from the outside the sudden urge to go out, do stuff, plan ahead looks like an improvement, like the victim is healing or had a breakthrough. But no, most of the time we call this "terminal depression" when the person reaches this specific stage, its pretty much over. The only times they can be saved is when the attempt fails, but its rare. Such a cruel stage, all their loved ones relax and expect further healing, but in fact its already over.

If someone is sad/depressed and then they all of a sudden “get better”, this is the most crucial time. Usually, this means they’ve accepted their fate and are happy/relieved that it’ll be over soon.

He bought more ammo and the gun based on the clerks recommendation to have a genuine interaction with someone. He knew he didn't need the Glock or the ammo, he just wanted to show the man that he respected his recommendations and time granted to him because likely noone was the same with him. Believe that he fought to survive until the very end. When we lose to our demons, it's not ourselves that pull the trigger. We don't kill ourselves. The demons do it to us. We always wanted to live. This big sad isn't a pain you can imagine. Please please please be kind. Even to those that don't deserve it. For the love of god... please be kind

Simplified story of my own.
Bought a small .22LR rifle from my friend, $250.
Told me he's hunted small game with the gun.
He shows me how to maintaine it, take it apart, care for it.
Took the gun to the local range, shot at some targets.
The next day I was happy, content, and going out of my way to help people or do my job the best I can.
People complimented me, was nice to me.
That night, I held the gun.
I aimed at myself through my mouth.
No bang, just a click.
Bolt malfunctioned,
Took the gun apart,
The bolt broke that night.
I'm still here, gun still in it's case with the broken bolt.

Yeah its unfortunate. Had this junior in college, never saw him upset or angry. An year after I graduated I heard he unalived himself in his dorm room a day before summer break started. Sometimes, you just can't tell

when i worked at an indoor shooting range, i did have one gentleman, seemed normal enough. we talked about ammo prices and his next few visits, his plan to invest in better ear protection, maybe get his own firearm. i sold him ear plugs, a rental .45 acp p320, and 150 rounds of ammo. he shot about two mags down range before turning to the side, and putting the gun to his head, thoughtful not to want to hit anybody with the bullet if it went through him. he pulled the trigger. i saw him on the ground, eyes wide open, mouth open. we locked eyes. i ran and started code blue protocol, my boss went to get everyone out of the range. walked a 7 year old and a 15 year old right past the corpse. no choice, better than leaving them in there with it. security footage was reviewed by police as he was being scraped up off the ground and taken away, and then finally everyone got to go. but not me. me and my team waited for the cleaners to get his bio matter out of the floor and whatnot, reopened the store hours later like it didnt happen. you could smell death in there for weeks, even with the ventilation going 24/7. that was our 3rd incident.

As a person that struggles with depression. And has come close to suicide. If there is a desire then the person will find a way. It's never a spur of the moment choice. The victim will plan everything out.

that interaction with the salesmen was probably the most human moment he had ever felt. even his parents were so insane that they even called a gun shop to let them know. the dude was sad and just wanted to be heard.

I remember reading that some of those who have decided on a plan of how to do it and a date just get apparently "better" from any visible symptoms of deep depression. As if the thought that everything will come to an end soon just releases them of all the pressure and sadness they felt and allows them to function normally, and even happily, in the wake of what they are about to do. That's why they are not signs.

Sometimes there aren't any red flags sometimes the happiest person that you would never think is depressed is actually the saddest person you know

A society which does not provide adequate mental health care or compassion to young men has zero right to pass judgement when they take matters into their own hands.

He did all that because it was human contact that he was craving or needed

i work at a gun store, had a guy come in, was acting fine, seemed ok, nothing wrong, asking normal questions, looking at different models to see what he liked, settled on a Springfield hellcat pro, not a bad choice. start the paperwork and he starts acting a little off, like he's a little buzzed, but not enough to stop it there. he does his part of the paperwork and I start my half of the background check. he asks if its alright if he steps outside for a cigarette while he waits, I tell him its fine cause its gonna take a few minutes anyway and we don't have any rules stating you have to stay in the building during the process. so he steps out for a few minutes and comes back a few minutes later with most of a bottle of mountain dew livewire he's sipping from. well come to find out it wasn't a cigarette he stepped out to smoke cause within 5 minute he is acting as though he was completely drunk, but you couldn't smell anything on him, it was bad enough to the point we stop the sale and call police, who upon searching him find 5-6 containers of meth and crack on him, which we can only assume he used some when he stepped out. safe to say he didn't get the gun.

You can try to limit the means, but you can't stop the motivation.

Had an older lady come in and buy a pistol, she was elderly and nice, think the sweet grandma vipes. Didn't ask any weird questions and didn't have any issues with the background check. She was more concerned about the gun matching her purse (it was a pink Ruger LCP and a pink purse) so no one really thought she would end up shooting her husband then herself as soon as she got back home with her newly purchased pistol.
We only found out when the cops came in the next day asking about the purchase.

One of the things they say to look for when someone is depressed then does a full 180 seemingly overnight is self deletion planning. When they've finally made up their mind to self delete it's like the worry goes away because they've made a choice.

"Are you the ones who sold my son that gun?"
"Yes, why?"
"I just thought you should know, he shot himself with it"
"...no returns"
