Step 1: Drop the whole "but my dream school" syndrome (4-year vacation at out-of-state/private school on your credit card). Congress MUST stop the federal student loan program NOW, but while we debate it, stop shooting yourself in the foot with a shotgun. Do two years at local community college while you work and save while living at home. You end up avoiding loans altogether or having barely any student debt. So much of this is YOUR CHOICE.

I’m disgusted that in my state of Alabama, high school seniors must fill out the FAFSA as a graduation requirement. A requirement! All so they can dangle the carrot in front of their faces and get them to sign on the dotted line and OWN them financially.
