*** Today's Sudoku***

Another masterpiece of originality today as Kit combines sudoku with the awesome Japanese pencil puzzle Heyawake. This is SUCH a cool idea and it's executed beautifully.

You can play it at the link below:

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits cannot repeat in cages or along the main (marked) diagonals. Each cell in the grid must be shaded dark or light according to the following rules: 1) within cages, the dark cells will sum to the cage's total (if given); 2) dark cells may not be orthogonally adjacent to one another; 3) all the light cells must be orthogonally connected in a single group; 4) a straight (orthogonal) line of light cells cannot span across more than two cages; and 5) the dark cells along the two main diagonals must sum to the same total.

People often wonder how sudoku could possibly be relaxing if you have to use your brain, but as you mentioned, you go in a bit of a meditative state when solving sudoku. It’s been a daily ritual for me now. I start the day with daily GAS and end it by catching up on with CTC :)

When I saw the title I thought we were going to get a 0, or a 10, or maybe a Schrodinger's cell, and I was prepared for existential panic.

24:10 You know it's a good puzzle when Simon's so invested he forgets to sing the song.

I like it when different types of puzzles get put together to create something new. I think this is an excellent example. Probably a good way to get your feet wet doing a new type of puzzle. I liked how Simon was able to explain it even though I've never seen that type of puzzle before. Simon explained it well enough that I was able to follow along and never felt lost.

Newbie here, this is one of the few puzzles on this channel I was able to solve without errors, took me a bit to find the 10 cage in the top right but after that I was able to able to follow the Heyawake and solve in 50:43. I really benefited from the Heyawake construction making it clear where I should look next.

@ 20:00, once you have colored the entire positive diagonal, you know the '1' is the only number to add to the negative diagonal. And once you determine R2C2 is blue, you know it is 1, and its partner at R4C1 is 9 to reach a total of 10.

For those (who may be) wondering, "heya wake" means "room division" in Japanese.

I really enjoyed the interaction across the rules of this puzzle as well as how it takes on an almost literal journey around the grid. The construction of the opening was very appealing as well. I rarely manage to finish the puzzles based on rules of a different sort of puzzle, but this was worth it!

17:52 ... I love puzzles like Heyawake, so this was particularly enjoyable for me.

Fun puzzle!

I finished in 46:06 minutes. Heyawake and Sudoku puzzles fit together so well. It was really fun doing the Heyawake to force certain cells to not be shaded, otherwise they pen in a group of unshaded. That is very cool to see. I had to keep reminding myself of the 3 cage span rule. For some reason, my brain kept thinking it had to also include every part of the cage in order to fail, not realizing that one cell in starting cage is enough to make it fail on the next cage. I really enjoyed this hybrid. Great Puzzle!

As a relatively new follower of the channel this is one of the first that I actually managed to solve start to finish by myself, and with only one mistake that I thankfully caught pretty quickly, haha. Took me just over 60 minutes! Much longer than Simon, of course, but a time that's very good for me! Huge thank you to Kit for such a wonderful and approachable puzzle.

I've never heard of heyawake before this puzzle. But I really enjoyed solving this sudoku. More please.
Thanks Kit and Simon.

at one point very close to the end I got stuck with all the numbers center marked, not able to find anything for solid 10 minutes. I went back to the video and then heard simon say "that square is quite restricted, because it sees so much in it's cage"

I completely forgot about the cages, because I had all the sums and just assumed there's only regular sudoku left

That was an absolutely beautiful puzzle. Something about the orange and blue shading made it by far one of my favorite puzzles to look at.

My favorite way to solve is by pausing the video to see how far I can get and when I get stuck, I continue the video to hear/see Simon's logic for solving and solve alongside him until I get the hang of it and then repeat. This was my first heyawake and I really enjoyed the way it interacted with the killer cages & normal sudoku rules.

Awww, the days of the Nikoli daily puzzles. Those were good days. Especially on days when I managed to post a faster time than people whose user names I got to know. Many changes since being an Asteroid there. I wonder if you had one of the usernames I got a kick out of beating!

Lovely puzzle and fun to remember heyawake again and some of the basic ways in which impossible patterns happened. Think I had a couple of Nikoli heyawake books too when the strong pound made buying them from Japan just about affordable.

Just missed out on a 20 minute solve. If only I hadn't swapped colour scheme half way.

Great idea for a puzzle and very pleasing execution of the idea. Hope to see a few more, at least popping up on discord.

My first heyawake, and I found the "wall of blue" very difficult to see at times. The sudoku logic was very easy to follow, but I'll have to watch the video again to understand the heyawake part. Fun to watch you solve, all the same. Your enthusiasm is catching, even when I don't fully understand the puzzle.
