I accepted the challenge of solving without pencil marks, and manged it in 14:33. So it works for this specific puzzle, but I'm not convinced that this approach can be generalised to all classic sudokus - it seems like this puzzle is specifically structured to provide lots of pointing pairs and hidden triples.

I accepted the challenge and solve this one without any pencilmark! My time was 4:45. But I guess that using the pencilmark it could be under 3min, because my hand was itching for some pencilmark 😅
Thanks for the solve! 🎉

13:11 No Snyder. I usually only do the NYTimes easy without notation. My goal is always in the 4 minute even range. The medium and hard, I have to notate.

I'm looking forward to the secret. No-mark solving will always be my preferred approach whenever it is possible. This grid has little to hide, but it still requires attentive scanning (43 = row 4 column 3):
43, 25, 92, 71, 53,
81, 91, 93, 63, 33,
61, 62, 31, 11, 39,
21, 79, 89, 77, 19,
99, 48, 49, 18, 26,
17, 29, 22, 34, 12,
32, 54, 95, 85, 98,
78, 88, 94, 84, 64,
57, 56, 75, 74, 76,
44, 35, 36, 65, 66,
15, 16, 45, 46, 67,
47.

If I could give any advice, it would be to follow the numbers you see rather than looking for those you don't. I see that Chaotix is convinced that adding Snyder Notation would have led to a faster solution here, and that may well be true for most people. However, seasoned notation-free solvers can effectively make mental pencil marks that never need to be erased. There really is nothing faster than just writing in the final numbers, as long as you make good use of short-term memory when needed.

I have a little treat for you, which is an evolution of an evolution of … I can't remember what. In spite of its somewhat daunting grade, it requires no Unfair or Extreme techniques if you're willing to defy the purists. If you have time to do it, I think you'll really like it:

000 000 000
045 608 700
030 709 060

021 003 450
000 060 000
067 500 120

050 407 030
002 306 540
000 000 000

HoDoKu rating: Extreme 2022.

Andrew Stuart rating: Very Hard Grade 487.

I did it notation-free, breaking the puzzle the first two times, restarting both times because I had no idea where I went wrong. I may have made the same mistake twice. I did notice (in my third solve) that the first two times both had a false conclusion in row 5 block 5, in my third solve. I don't know when I made the mistake(s) leading to a false 23 pair. The third trial, I struggled the most, but at least I succeeded.

I had a slough of chocolate-teapot triples. Near the end, when I finally realized I could place a digit in block 3, they all melted.

11:40 - not sgp material, but i got by without notes

i don't know much about the sgp, but this seems easier than what i would have expected in such a competition... is this typical? if so, i guess the key ability to have is speed rather than deduction, and i have such trouble scanning the grid... also is pencilmarking forbidden? that always felt kind of like cheating to me... thanks for your smooth walkthrough

I was able to solve this in 6 minutes without pencilmarking, although does significantly solve much faster with it with Snyder Notations.

This is very useful. However, I doubt that it will work if the puzzle requires a y-wing logic to solve it.

This is nonsense, and typical of these soduku videos, when the solver has the finished puzzle Example: he places a 2 with another cell in the block it could go into.
