Hurricane Helene has started to rapidly intensify and is now a major hurricane expected to make landfall near Apalachee Bay with a devastating storm surge of up to 20 feet, and widespread hurricane force winds. Storm impacts could be seen across almost the entireity of Florida, and the Tallahassee region is likely to be impacted by hurricane force winds later this evening. Helene could still become a Category 4 hurricane before landfall, although its relatively slow progress so far is starting to decrease those chances.

The storm's primary hazards are a devastating storm surge and flooding spreading well inland into Georgia and the Carolinas, where tropical storm warnings are also in effect. Landfall is likely to occur a little after sunset this evening.

Elsewhere, John is a hurricane once again, and is stalling off the coast of Mexico where Hurricane Warnings are in effect. The storm is starting to drag further west and is now expected to make landfall in western Michoacan.
