Burgeoning bedroom-pop sensation Chappell Roan stopped by the RS studio for an intimate conversation with Rolling Stone’s Ilana Woldenberg. If you take one thing from this interview, it’s that Chappell pulls no punches when it comes to committing herself mind, body, and soul to her fans. Roan discussed the physical challenges of touring, the wonder of her first ever professional voice lesson, and the joy she takes in building her wild and wonderful world of thrift, glitter, and camp.

I like that she doesn't mind naming her inspiration (including modern inspiration) and she's so open about how many people helped make this happen. Music is built on what came before. So, when you try to be too original it's rarely a good thing. It also really benefits from collaboration. I just love what people can do when they come together to make music.

I’m 49, so discovering new artists has to be thru media that shares a variety of music styles & genres (KEXP, NPR tiny desk concerts, WFUV, etc.). I probably never would’ve known about Chappell, had it not been for her NPR tiny desk performance, and now, the YouTube algorithm is recommending her interviews to me.

She’s definitely one to look out for, and it’s awesome that she’s got the foresight to think about longevity & protecting her overall health, because she’s gonna be around for as long as she wants to be. She’ll be a household name in no time. 👏

Yrs ago I heard Pink Pony Club on YouTube. Then I spent the next two years trying to find the song again & it took me a while. Then I lost it again. A few months ago I rediscovered it & now I have it saved in my playlist & I love hearing Chappell's new music. ( :

I like that she's honest about her music being a project with a team and that they have used a formula.

People see it like she IS the music, the music is her and she's connecting to the songs the same way they are but she's actually not, for the most part.

She's the figurehead of an art piece the audience can put their own interpretation on and that hopefully prevents too mental of a parasocial relationship developing which is a wise move. I just hope she doesn't get overwhelmed by how religiously insane some humans are about their "idols"
